Whenwords—“put a little fun back in sports, the owner of the new Macon, Ga., frahchise in theSouthern Hockey League has announced the team’s official name:The Macon Whoopees.Gerald C. Pinkerton, the Atlanta businessman who owns the team, announced the name today at a community reception and press conference attended by more than 250 . people at •Macon's 7,200-seat coliseum, home of the Whoopees.“We think there’s a tendency to get a little uptight about too many things these days,” saidthe name ‘Macon Whoopees,’ was first proposed, we thought it was terrific—but we wanted to see' how the people of Macon would accept it. They obviously have, and now we hope we can give something back to the community.Pinkerton announced plans tochannel funds from Macon Whoopee “booster promotions” into local charitable endeavors, especially those which assist handicapped children.“I have been fortunate to meet and tome to know some of the finest oWpers in professional sports, he Said, including my fellow governors in the Southern Hockey League.
