Men's Softballers Down National Torches 10 to 2In a crowd-pleasing game, before a large turnout, a Bow-manville Men’s All-Star appre-gation downed the National Torches, a prominent Toronto ladies’ team, 10-2 at Vincent Massey Park, on Friday night.Pat Cornell and Mel Burgess shared the pitching duties for the local club, with Burgess and battery mate Syd Arnold playing for the girls during the second half of the contest. It is customary in an exhibition match between a ladies and a men’s team for the batteries to switch, therefore the men received in exchange a colourful (names anyway) combination in the personage of pitcher Black and catcher Brown.After a scoreless first innin?. Arnold belted anotherfour bagger to start the fourth,; Dadson clubbed a prodigiou* homer followed by hits by Mic-key Walker and Everett King, as Bowmanville added to their margin, before Burgess toolc over on the Torches’ mound.Batting against reliefer Burgess, the Toronto Ladies capitalized on an error to score tjier two runs in the fifth. Demoroy’* two-bagger was the big blow, and she scored when she jolted (?) the ball loose from Arnold’s grasp, on a throw to the plata.Pitcher Black looked impressive against her own team allowing no hits in the last four frames. Burgess stymied the Bowmanville home-run attack, allowing only three hits for tire last two local tallies. The Torches are an impressive, hustling ball team, and look ai though they could hold theif own in any ladies league.
