THRU THE ♦ ISPORTS MIRROR I(Br RUSS J COWANS)\ 4.' * -• •There Is « serious need for the bolstering of teems in the Negro American League. This has been indicated in the weak teams which have appeared at Hamtramck Stadium during the past several weeks. St. Louis, a club which haa dropped 10 consecutive games to the Detroit Stars, is one team in particular. The St, Louis club demonstrated on its recent trip to Hamtramck Stadium that the owners of the club need plenty of new material. Thia will include infielders, outfielders, pitchers and £$tchers. The club is woefully weak in all departments. Not only is St. Louis weak, but the players evidenced no aggressiveness on theolaylng field In fact, there was such a strong evid/dWoT^la^’gy that many of the fans present at the dou JTe-headerJSohei^y expressed themselves in no uncertain ts p about not eoriing again to see games where St. Louis lias a participant.Recently Indianapolis appeared at the Hamtramck Stadium and dropped a series of games to the Stars. And. like the St. Louik club, the Hoosiers proved very weak ! in the field, at th«i;plate, and on the pitching mound.1 Of course, I’$i aware that almost every club in the league is buUding^for the future. I know each club has a crop of youngsters on whose inexperienced shoulders the burden of fighting the battle has been placed. But time has ! proved that these (shoulders are immature and unable to pack the load. However, there are a few exceptions. Cincinnati, Chicago And Kansas City have come along well during the current season. Each of these clubs has placed some veteran material in with the recruits.Manager Andrew Cooper of the Monarchs has Newt Allen, veteran of many campaigns, at second base, and Dwight, another veteran in the outfield. In addition, there’s Chester Brewer and Alfred Cooper, two pitchers i who have seen service in the league for more than seven years, on the pitching staff. Cincinnati has Manager Theodore Radcliffe and one or two others. Chicago has Alex Radcliffe, Theodore Trent. Cornelius Detroit has Turkey Steames, Dimp Miller and Albert Davis. It would be advisable for the owners to hire a few veterans. These men with years of experience behind them, could help keep these impulsive youngsters on the 1 srround whenever the game gets hot.
