The fire fighters won but they hud no easy time of it nud the result was in doubt uutil the last., inning. Hall, who pitched for the visitors, proved to be one of tlio hardest propositions that the local players haiej neon up against since the seasonopened. . Six lilts only were made oil his delivery but lie kept them so well . scattered that only in one inning uu they amount to much and it is . doubtful if they would have cut much ot a figure chon had it not. been for a. ver\costly .error by Yalesville’s centerfielder, whose wild tbrosv let m tworuns. Hall bad excellent control of. the ball, and pitched a very steady game. Kirk, who twirled lor the home team, was in fine form and heldhis opponents down to one solitary hit. They would not have scored hue for svild throws. Tho scoreof tiie game was 3 to 3. The fielding on both sides was of a sensational order.and not an error was made by anv of r,lie .outfielders Some of film ,Hies which they caught were hard toget but they caught every ball that came their way. Jones of the local team had four chances in left fieldnud accepeted every one of them.Noitlier side scored until the nttsfi inning, when Yalesille got one runnud took the lead. Upson’s scratch Jilt was fielded by Ivirko, who threw to Danny Sweeney at first base, but the ball went over the fence and Upson scored. In the sixth inning the lirefighters scored theii’jthreejruns. Kirke, the first man up, Iut a grounder past third base and Pacchetc, who ran tor him stole second base. Jones was given a base on balln, and Clifford cracked out a nice one over second base, scoring Pabchebt. Burgofi:, Yaiesvitle’s center fielder, threw theball home to prevent Jones from scoring but the ball went over the catcher's head and into the weeds near the grand stand. Before it was recoveredJones and Clifford scored. The next three batsmen were retired in short order and Naugatuck's run-making was ended.g The visitors made their seecond run in the eighth.; With one man out Leahy, pounded out a hot grounder to Sweeney which die latter failed to pick up in time to catch him at first. Burghoff was retired on a groundor r,o Ashmore, but Daunvdweoney, in throwing to second to catch Leahy,; misjudged the distance and the ball went.into left field, Leahy scoring on tho error.A dispute in this inning over a decision by Umpire Clifford caused some excitement. Jacobs, who followed Burghoff, was'hit by a pitched ball and went to first. White made a foul tip as Jacobs started for seecond and Foley throw to Clifford but the throw was a poor one and Jacobs came home. Umpire Clifford ordered him back ro first base, saying that White had made a foul biit the Yalosivlle players in- (siscod that it, was not a foul and de- j clared that Foley would not havethrown the ball to Clifford at second base if it were a foul. They also claimed that Umpire Clifford had called- it a strike, g The umpire had called it a strike but immediately afterward called it a foul, moaning, of course, that it was a strike because it, was a foul.; If he Had said “Foul, strike” at first there would not have been as much ground for argument. But Jacobs had to go back' to firstbase and then Whitp struck out. Many of those who witnessed the game hope that another game will boiirranged between the two teams beforo [he end of the season, The score :N.
