BEGINNER’S CORNER -hint explanation;Sacrifice and mate Viva AnandBEGINNER'S CORNERa b c d e f g hBLACK HAS A KILLERBy Shelby LymanFor most everyone it was not business as usual at the Frankfort Chess Classic 2000 - a welcome relief to Viswanathan Anand who gloriously swept the tournament with a 71/2-21 /2 score. It was vindication time for the Indian grandmaster who has slumped badly during the last year and a half while drifting down from second to sixth-ranked in the world.Finishing a full point-and-a-half behind Anand was Garry Kasparov. This was the first occasion in two years that Kasparov had not won a major tournament in which he participated. A small consolation to the World Champion was that Vladimir Kramnik, his prospective opponent in a title match scheduled for October, did even worse. He trailed in third place a full point behind Kasparov. The tournament was notable for anomalous results. Peter Leko, who is notoriously difficult to defeat, nevertheless dropped five games to finish in a lie for last with Alexander Morozevich. Bat he managed despite his dreadful result to beat both Kramnik andKasparov. Fbr Kramnik, the losswas his first in more than a year.It is welcome news for the chess world that Anand - who at his best is a potential world champion and a symbol of the renaissance of Asian Chess - is back in form. The tournament - which featured the six highest-ratedplayers in the world - was by design one of the strongest ever held. The result should raise Anand at least a couple of notches on the world ranking list.Below is a ninth-round crusher against Alexei Shirov * third-ranked in the world - who lost both of his games against Anand.AnandShirovl.e4e62, d4d53.
