Tommy had trained assiduously for this race and was in the pink of condition when he stepped out to meet about a score of contenders fo rthe title over this distance at the Dominion track and field championship meet at Winnipeg on Saturday.It was a most thrilling race. Towns allowed tli^ coast man topace until the final lap sprinted and drew ahead, lie threw a shoe and had to finish on a naked foot. Towns had shown at Portage on Empire Day and in Brandon many times how brilliantly he can finish in the five mile run andhis shoe not come off he wouldmost probably have given Chandler the surprise of his life. Towns ran second in the Sun road race in when .toe Keeper annexed the trophy. Towns was only a few yards. |(||race and hassince improved wonderfully.
