Elliott enjoys good nightBy Bob Longwith Tribune sportswriterWarsaw’s Tony Elliott was the fastest qualifier and the quickest in the 25-lap sprint feature race as he scored ms second straight triumph at the Kokomo Speedway following the 38th annual fireworks display Sunday night.Elliott was sixth in the'inverted start of the 18-car feature race and had charged into second behind pole-sittter Dave Darland by the second lap, with Alien Barr third and Kokomo’s Tim Bookmillerfourth.After four complete laps, Allen Hunt brought out a yellow flag with a spin.Before the restart, Darland whowas in the lead, dropped out with am. John S also dropped Elliott inherited the lead on the----jbrake problem Bobby KinserMapes and out.restart and led the rest of the way with Barr, Bookmiller and Gary Fisher in hot pursuit. Elliott picked up a healthy lead, The main battle was going on behind him when Jeff Doneison, who was running seventh, spun in turn four to bring out the yellow flag with five laps left in the race,When the green flag came out. Elliott charged in front and stayedthere the rest of the way. VanGurley, Barr, Bookmiller and HiPaul Huntington finished behind him. Burlington's Brad Boyer was sixth, and Kokomo drivers Gary Fisher, Mark Owsley, Doneison and Tom Chalk rounded out thetop 10.After those drivers had crossed the finish line, Steve Imel andKokomo driver Kurt Hawkinstangled coming out of the thirdiwkiturn with Hawkins flipping in awild crash. Neither driver was injured.’‘The car felt great and 1 got a good break at the first of the race,” Elliott said after the race. “I got a good jump at the start and just stayed in my own group (of cars) and hoped for the best. ” Elliott had planned to run inWisconsin at the Dells Sunday, but rain in that area made him decideto run in Kokomo. Kokomo driver Tony Ploughe had been ticketed to drive Elliott’s car.Fisher, Doneison and Randy Hutchinson won the heat races, and Barr won the trophy dash.Rookie driver Jim Kasey wasirdrunning third in the third heat race and spun into the infield coming out of turn four on the final lap.In hobby stocks, Galveston sJim Taylor was fast qualifier and the winner of the first heat race. Marion’s Glen Bradley won the second heat with Dalton Gates winning the trophy dash and the feature.The feature victory was Gates’second straight, with Bradleyird,finishing second, Dick Day thin Cliff Burns fourth and Bill Ice fifth.In street stocks, Swede Boiander won his second feature race of the season, snapping Jim Davis’ two-race winning streak.
