STUART’S disparagement of Houk’s qualifications as an All Star manager makes it fair play to question Stuart’s qualifications as an All Star player, even if 64 American Leaguers did vote for him.In a recent Yankee game in Boston, Elston Howard was the runner on second base and, with two out, there was no need for Stuart to have made a recluse of himself when John Blanchard hit a high pop fly into the infield. The ball started out to the left of the pitcher's box, but a stiff breeze carried it to the right side.Eddie Bressoud raced in from short and Chuck Schilling dashed in from second as the wind took the ball, which ultimately would have blocked halfway between the mound and first base. When Stuart made no move, Earl Wilson tried tocatch the ball himself. As it hit his glove, Bressoudbanged into him. Both fell and Schilling tripped overthem. The ball squirted out of the tangle, Howardscored the first run of an easy Yankee victory, andWilson, the Boston starting pitcher, was so shaken uphe had to leave the game.* * *STUART’S role as an interested onlooker was not calculated to impress a manager and it could be that this one play made Houk think of Siebern when the necessity for putting a Kansas City player cn the squad arose.Stuart does have a real talent for hitting the long ball and his home run total at Fenway Park is impressive. But the Monday night game in New York was important to the Red Sox and Johnny Pesky benched Stuart because Stuart had gummed up the defensive detail at first base the day before. The story at the stadium was that Stuart angrily barged into the manager’s office in the visitors* clubhouse and demanded to be put in the starting line-up. It was necessary for Pesky to remind the hot-headed player who was boss of the team.? Maybe the fellow who has the real beef about not1 making the All Star team is Dick Williams. On this occasion, at least, Pesky felt Williams could do a better job for the Red Sox at first base than Stuart.
