Ind.—The bicycle road race from Indianapolis to Matthews, via Muncie, a distance of seventy-five miles, recently, was one of the hardest •oad races ever run. and the winner, Marshall Taylor, a lad aged IS, weight 125 pounds, proved himself a wonder. There were tnirty-six starters and but a single finisher, although six riders reaehed Muncie, but sixteen miles from the finish. They were Jacob Stein me rtz, Grover Sreen, Andrew Freide, Clyde Freeman, an unknown sixteen-year-old boy. and Taylor. When the crowd reached McCord's the rain commenced falling and kept it up, and in some places water reached the spocket wheel and riders could not keep on the wheels. When the leaders reached Muncie at noon they were soaking with water and covered with mud. Kd Hudon, Charles Froxier and Ed Hollowell, of Muncie, met the leaders at Daleville. and a part of the trip to Muncie was on the Big Four railroad tracks. Jap Clements and Otis Brige caine here on the cars to pace the leaders to Matthews. Taylor's clip was so fast that he even dis- i tanced them and rode the last nine miles alone. All who reached Muncie started for Matthews, but threw up the sponge, as did Taylor's pace-makers I six miles out, and none would ride on j to get second prize. #25 in cash.
