Bedford dropped the contest. 14-fi.A patchwork squad depleted by injuries, vacations, and work commitments fell Sunday at Somerset, 14-6.Bedford coach Kevin Klifte kept his thoughts to himself after Saturday’s second game, in whichClaysburg overcame a 12-1 deficit in the final two innings.A double by Brett Brubaker, singles by Jeff Brown, Tony Garver, Darrin Brumbaugh, Bruce Moore, and John Kormanski, and an errorpushed six runs across in the Claysburg sixth.Claysburg added three more in the seventh on singles by Bill Forshey, Mike Smouse, and Brumbaugh, and an error on a Garver grounder.A fielder’s choice, a walk, andanother error loaded the bases withtwo out before Brubaker smashed a double to deep left center to clear thebases.Prior to the dramatic reversal, the game had been all Bedford.The locals got to C-K starter Kevin Helsel, who was pitching on shorl rest, for three in the first. He gave up two runs, only one of them earned. After Merchants tried another pitcher in the fourth. Sellers came back in to pitch three shutout innings.New Baltimore got their two runs off of Sellers in the third. With two outs, John Maddy and Larry Hankinson both got bunt singles. When Maddy took a big lead off of second, the third baseman attempted to throw him out, but the throw went to center field, allowing Maddy to go to third. The Bedford tandem of Clark and Kyle Martz matched five-hltters with Claysburg southpaw Wes Shaw.The difference in the game was a bloop double to left In the fifth inning by Kormanski which came on the heels of a deep two-bagger by Moore,Claysburg took a 1-0 lead in the third on walks to Smouse and Shaw, a single by Brumbaugh, and a fly to left by Bruce Moore. Bedford evened the count in the fourth on a double by Doman and a single by Keith Engle.Engle also made a conspicuous defensive contribution from behind the plate, throwing out three Claysburg runners on the basepaths.Brumbaugh had two hits, the most on either side.Fielding FaltersBeegie was slated to start Sunday's contest at Somerset, but a jammed ankle suffered in the second game Saturday swelled overnight and kept him out of the lineup,Beegie was only one of three , regulars out of the lineup at Somerset, and the effects of the makeshift lineup showed up in seven errors.That’s just too many errors, Kline said. We hit the ball good, but we just didn’t field the ball.Injuries, vacations, and work left Kline short of pitching. Bedford junior Curt Engie made his first trip to the mound since late in the high school season, and his first ever Legion pitching appearance. A bit of rust from the long layoff revealed itself in the form of three balks and nine walks. But after a shaky start Engle came on to hold Somerset to just one hit over the final five innings.The game started promisingly for Bedford. With one out, Curt Engle singled, Elliot singled, and Shoemaker tripled to center. A throwing error on a Bobby Kendall grounder scored Shoemaker.Somerset came back with two in the first on a double by Scott Darr, a single by Matt Joseph, and a double by Randy Christner. They took a 4-3 lead in the second on a walk to Bob Stoy and a triple by Scott Close.The roof caved in in the third. Seven Somerset runs crossed the plate on just three hits, a double by Christner and singles by Stoy and Andy Rush.Bedford added a run in the fourth on singles by Doman, Shoemaker, and Martz, and two in the eighth on singles by Shoemaker and Martz and a double by Morsberger.Somerset picked up two in theseventh and one in the eighth. All three r.uns were unearned and werescored without benefit of a hit.The Hurricanes outhit Somerset. 11-8.
