This was, according to reports, the Orioles first win of the year.After five scoreless innings Oxford came to life and scored two runs on a single by Rucker and a double by Cobb followed by an error by second sackerMike O-Neil.The Merchants came back in the first of the seventh and scored three runs on successive hits by Zahner, Stone, Parker, a free ticket issued to Dave O’Neil and another single by Walt Buffalo. Buffalo and Zahner hail from Oxford.Oxford came back with three runs of their own to take a 5 to 3 lead at the end of seven innings and were never heeded.Steve Rice led off the inning with a single and rode home on a round tripper by Oxfoi d slugger Bruce Wilkie. A single by Brad to the winning pitcher, and double by Weidman accounted for the other run.Oxford finished off their scoring with three more runs in the eighth inning on singles by ClaudeChristian, an error by Zahner, Steve Rice’s third hit of the day and a booming double by theNorwich tallied its fourth run of the game in the last inning on a double by Dave O’Neil, an error by Rucker, and a sacrifice fly off the bat off Dave Petley, former manager of the Preston Bears.This was a tugh loss for Norwich as it puts them another game behind the league leading Rich-ford ball team.Bill Bradt forced the Merchants to fly out 13 times andhad good support from his teammates.Jerry Parker had two hits and drove in two runs to pace the Norwich Merchants attack.
