She defeated Terry Cobb of St. Paul in the state finals, 6-1, 6-1, to gain the national berth.Last year Diane Knudsonwtraveled to Provo, Utah, where the championships were conducted at Brigham Young University. This year the trip will be much shorter for Jane, but the stakes will be just as high.She will make a return trip to St. Paul for the nationals, starting Aug. 2.“I went up to St. Paul for the state tournament with no hope at all of winning,” she remarked after receiving a plaque from the local Javcees for winning the local tournament.However winning in sports isnothing new to this gal. Although this is her first tennis title, her record shattering performances have been recorded in track meets where she set school marks in the 50 -dash and shot put last spring.A modest sports woman, Jane talks little about herself. However, her accomplishments talk louder than words.She was chosen Outstanding Athlete of the Year bv members«Fof the Girls Recreation Association during a spring banquet, and was elected president of the organization.When Jane started to play tennis about five years ago, she says, she did not do any concentrated work on it. In fact, it wasn’t until the local tournament this year that she reallygot going.Now she plavs everv dav and on a good day puts in between two and two-and-a-half hours.Those, she feels, could be extended somewhaf, but her duties as park supervisor in the city's recreation program at Morin Park, keeps her busy most of the dav.%•Jane is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Christensen, 2103 Fdgewood Drive.With one more year of com-* *petition remaining, no matter what the outcome of the nationals this year, she will have another chance to do better nextyard year
