Norwich Merchants Defeat Owego 8-2In a game that was stopped at the end of the fifth inning be. cause of rain, the Norwich Mer-chants defeated the Owego entry in the Empire State League 8 to 2.Keith Vanderlip gave up only four hits and struck out six in this rain shortened contest.Norwich scored in every inn. ing with three runs crossing the plate in the third inning erasing a 2 to 2 ball game.The Merchants started the game with a base hit by JerryParker. Parker took second on a passed ball and scored on a double to Dave O’NeiLNorwich scored again in the second inning on a single by Don Goodwine driving in Vanderlip who had been issued a base on balls.The big third inning started with Dave O’Neil’s double. A single by brother Mike moved Dave to third who then scored when the left fielder bobbled the ball. Dave Petley followed with a booming triple over the left fielders head scoring Mike O'Neil for the second run of the inning and on the first pitch to Vanderlip, Petley scored when the ball got away from the catch, er.The Merchants scored three more runs in the next two inn. ings before the rains came.Jerry Parker singled to start the sixth inning but was deprived of his third hit because of the game being stopped.
