The View From Here”By Bob HcrsomTho freak accident to the E'Hawks' tine left fielder, Rich Stillman, during the 20-3 Storm Lake rout showed how unimportant sports are compared to so many other aspects of our lives.Who really cared about the game after seeing the severity of Stillman's injury? For all intents anc purposes, the game was over following that unfortunate mishap in left field. The record book will show a 20-3 blasting by the Tornadoes. But, remember, it was anybody's ball game at that point. The score was 4-2 following that solo home run.The deep laceration to Rich's leg certainly was the primary reason Emmetsburg lost so badly. The E'Hawks aren't as bad as that, fans. Give 'em another try. Would you really care very much about a ball game when one of your teammates has just been rushed to the hospital with a very deep cut in his left leg and what many feared might be a break?TiMinUrt/ Hi^TCP . A A _error is called when, in the official scorer's judgment, the fielder should have normally been able to make the play. . But high school players vary so much in quality that It is sometimes difficult to judge . . . Emmetsburg coach Mike Schneiders, for Instance, disagreed with me on at least two plays in which I .didn't call an error ... But Mike is a coach and he naturally expects higher quality play than I do . . . But, really Mike, how can you call an error on the catcher on a pop fly that lands more than half-way down the third base line?It was my pleasure to supply Mike and John Nagle with statistics sheets for both their broadcasts . . . After all, we're all in this together in 1he Journalism business.. . Also glad to note during their two broadcasts that John often used information gleaned from articles in this paper . . . Would you believe 48 errors were made during the seven-game tournament? . . . Sper.cer made the most mfscues with 11 in their three games.Dave Potratzof KICD-Radio in Spencer didn'l broadcast any of the tourney games, but he was very helpful on press row, operating the new scoreboard and announcing the batters occasionally . . . Potratz also drove Rich Stillman to the hospital following the freak Injury.The tables and chairs cn press row will remain infact, says Clint Stille ...
