Toms Break Ice/Defeat PhilliesIAt Home TonightTHOMASVILLE — Thomasville’s Hi-Toms havefinally broken the ice in the second half of the Western Carolinas League baseball season and will be at home tonight, attempting to get a win streak off the ground. vThe Hi-Toms square off against Lexington’s Giants at 7:15 p.m. at Finch Field, with Dick Sommer (8-6), a righthander, slated to work on the mound.The Hi-Toms bounced back *--into the win column last night at Spartanburg after losingtheir first three games during the second half of the splitseason.RIGHT HANDER DaveBryce kept his won-lost rec-urvord unblemished as he tossed a neat four-hitter at the Phillies to pick up his sixth victory of the season.An unearned run in the top of the second netted the Hi-Toms a 1-0 victoryBryce didn’t appear to make any mistakes as he worked his way to his latest victory, and opposing hurlerBarry Lersch made only one,but it was costly.offensive slump, got only one otter runner as far as third base. In the seventh, Alexander beat out a bunt for an infield single and then stole second. The throw from the catcher sailed into centerfield, and Alexander tookthird. There were two out, however, and the side was retired when Steve Free flied out to center.Bryce allowed only four safeties, all singles, and fanned five while walking only one., iThe Hi-Toms’ Bob Beckner opened the second frame witha single, one of only threehits the Hi-Toms got all evening. Lersch, attempting to pick Beckner off first, threwfield, and the Hi-Toms’ third sacker raced 1 all the way around to thirdbase. He scored moments later on a sacrifice fly by left fielder Bob Alexander.SPARTANBURG threatenedtwice. In the second, Dick Hoover walked and Lersch. next up, faked a bunt andslammed a single past Beckner. Bob Kelley then ground an infield hit to the shortstop and Hoover, who had moved to second, was thrown out trying to steal home.In the ninth, Spartanburg’s Roger Nelson hit another infield single and Kelley followed with a grounder to second baseman Free who tossed)THE HI-TOMS, who are currently in the throes of anthe ball to Jim Glover, covering second. Glover took hisfoot off the sack, allowingboth runners to base safely.
