PUGILISMAnd Saloon Business arc ScaredI --Former Prize Fighter Given a Stiff Sentence for Assault, by JudgeWebber of ElyriaAkron, O., July 2.—AH Simms. thepugilist. was yesterday sentenced to pay a fine of $200 and to serve three months in the Canton workhouse for com mitt Inn assault and battery on a girl in a Barberton saloon. The sentence was pronounced by Judge A. R. Webber of Elyria, who. when told by Simms that he had been a potter an 1 later a saloon keeier and boxer, said to him In open court:“Your offense Is only one of many that grow out of the business that you are en-enged in. How ean you ply your pugilistic business In Ohio and comply with the law* Prize lighting Is a dishonorable business, and the saloon business is worse. If our girls cannot bo protected we have come to asad state of affairs ” *Simms promised the court that he would quit the saloon bustm ss and pugilism at orae. Almost at the same hour an agent of the Sanduskv Brewing Co. took charge of Simms’ cafe became Simms' contract had expired. Simms had one of the finest saloons in the city. At one tinK» he was the champion featherweight ofOhio and aspired to the national championship.'
