Merchants Record Fifth Straight W inThe undefeated Norwich Merchants recorded their fifth straight Empire League win Sunday as they downed Greene for the second time this season 8.2.The Merchants jumped to a two-run lead in the second inning on an error by Greene plus a base on balls. John Stewart then drove in the runs with tri-triple. Greene came back to tie the game at two apiece in the fourth when a single by Wes Tallett and double by Bill Fairchild put men on second and third. Dan Fairchild chased both men home with a single.Singles by Mike O’Neil and Dave O’Neil were followed by a double by Dave Petley and another single by Jim Downey to give Norwich three runs in the fifth and a 5-2 lead.In the seventh inning the Merchants finished their scoring for the day when Dave O’Neil sing-led, Petley was hit with a pitch,and Jim Downey walked to loadthe bases. Pitcher Bill Bradt promptly unloaded them with a triple to send three runs across.Bradt pitched all the way for Norwich and spaced eight hits during the game, with Bill Fairchild the only Greene batsman to get more than one hit.Dan Fairchild started for Greene and was charged withthe loss, giving up seven runs and eight hits in the 6 2(3 inn-ings he worked. He was reliev-ed by Fitzer in the seventh whoallowed three hits and one run in finishing the game.The Merchants travel to Rich-ford on the fourth of July and will be home for a game with Cortland on Sunday.
