Abe skaters fall; Rice Lake stops HaywardWhile Eau Claire Memorial was suffering a 9-4 non-confernece hockey loss to Superior Saturday afternoon, Rice Lake was staying unbeaten in the Northwest Hockey Conference in a shootout with Hayward.Memorial allowed three short-handed goals and two power-play goals in dropping to 10-4 on the season.“We missed some opportunities to score,’’ said Memorial Coach Mark Froehle. “We didn’t cover up real well in front of the net and we were hurt by the short-handed goals.”Aaron Gotham led the Superior attack with four goals and two assists for the defending state champs.Bob Anderson’s goal knotted the game at 1-1 before the Spartans broke loose for a 6-1 lead in the second period at Hobbs Ice Center.Jamie Seyberth, Jim Frome and Tim Schuring also scored for the Old Abes.Penalties hurt both teams with Superior collecting 11 penalties, including two double-minors and a game disqualification.“The game was really too rough,” said Froehle. “It was not a good game by either team.”The Abes, 4-0 in the Big Rivers Conference, travel to Chippewa (3-1) Thursday.Rice Lake won its fourth straight league game Saturday afternoon, while River Falls edged Chippewa Falls McDonell 5-4 in overtime and Altoona held on for a 6-5 non-conference win against Stoughton.Two power-play goals ♦ brought Hayward within 3-2 in the third period, but Scott Tieff provided the Warriors’ insurance goal with 1:07 remaining.Rice Lake limited Hayward to four shots on goal over the first two periods.McDonell held a 2-0 lead before River Falls spurted to a 3-2 lead after one period. McDonell scored twice in the third period to force overtime. But Kevin Kuselik’s third goal of the game gave the Wildcats the win with 1:13 left in the extra period.Dan Hailing hit ShaneHemenway with a pass before the feed went to Kuselik for a tip in front of goalie Dan liehr. Each team had six shots on goal in the overtime. Kai Syr-ala had two goals and an assist for McDonell.Stoughton held a 4-2 lead before Altoona scored four straight and held on for a second straight win over Stoughton.“We really had to hang tough and play our best for this game,” said Altoona Coach Francis LaChap-pelle. “We’re beginning tc play our style of hockey on a consistent basis.”Ed Schafer had two goals while Jim Smith and Pete Weghorn each had a goal and two assists for the Rails.
