The men fought at 142 pounds. Needham at that time had the best record of any lightweight in the country, and was regarded in the northwest as invincible. Ryan, who was only 19 years old, won the battle In seventy-six rounds.Will I ever forget that awful night? said Ryan this morning. After every round, when I went to my corner, 1 said to myself, ‘Just let me get out of this business to-night, and if I ever get Into it again. I'll be a lunatic.’ I felt that way up to the sixtieth round. At that juncture Needham’s friends proposed that we make it a draw. I Instantly took heart. He was champion, I was a kid with a reputation to make, the world was all before me, and I was stil strong. I started right after him, and wasn’t I strong in that seventy-sixth round, the last one? Why, I sent back word, ‘No draw for me.’ After I won, of course, I was ready to fight anything or anybody.
