He will try conclusions with James Judge, the young Philadelphia giant, at the Minneapolis Athletic Club to-night in a six-round contest.Tommy Ryan is a mighty Interesting person to talk with when he appears dressed in a neat business suit of light gray.^dark brown overcoat, red and black tie with a sprig of diamond flashing from the knot, and the air of a prosperous business man about him. He looks more like a traveling man or fashionable club man than a pugilist, and after talking with him an hour, the conviction takes possession of one that Mr. Ryan is a successful business man. He makes fighting a business, but he thrives on It. He Is only 30 years old, yet he has been fighting for nearly fifteen years, and he is still healthyenough to bet any part of $10,000 that hecan defeat any man In the world at the middleweight limit, 168 pounds. Ryan has saved his money and “has it In bales.A Model Fijfhter.“I don't show many marks of brutal usage, do I?” asked Ryan in The Journal office to-day. “Well, 1 take care of myself. I never drink, seldom smoke, have a family and behave myself. The boxing business is settling down to legitimate sport, really. People like to see it, for it is a manly, exercise, and, properly practiced, can hurt nobody.“The fighting of the future—that word ‘fighting’ is a bad one—should be conducted only in responsible clubs under the direction of gentlemen. A trial of skill by two clever men has nothing brutal about It. We aim, In boxing, to bit certain places on the anatomy of our opponents that will put them to sleep; but, pshaw, it doesn’t amount to anything to get a rap on the point of the jaw. You don’t know it. You are Ju8t like a man who has taken laughing gas to have a tooth pulled. Out comes the tooth and you never feel it. The old-time slugging matches, in which two men stood up and pounded each other until one of them was knocked senseless, are played out. No one cares to see them. There is no sport in that sort of thing. The referee 6hould have authority to stop a contest when he is satisfied that one or the other of the contestants has no show to win.Fought Danny Nedham.Mr. Ryan reverted to his first visit to Minneapolis years ago, when he fought Danny Needham in the longest battle of his career. The men fought at 142 pounds. Needham at that time had the best record of any lightweight in the country, and was regarded in the northwest as Invincible. Ryan, who was only 19 years old, won the battle in seventy-six rounds. Will I ever forget that awful night? said Ryan this morning. “After every round, when I went to my corner, I said to myself, ‘Just let me get out of this business to-night, and if I ever get into it again. I'll be a lunatic.’ I felt that way up to the sixtieth round. At that juncture Needham's friends proposed that we make it a draw. I Instantly took heart. He was champion, I was a kid with a reputation to make, the world was all before me, and I was stil strong. I started right after him, and wasn’t I strong In that seventy-sixth round, the last one? Why, I sent back word, ‘No draw for me.’ After I won, of course, I was ready to fight anything or anybody.Opinions of Other Fighters. As to the big fellows and fighters generally, Ryan has his opinions and he is not afraid to express them. “McCoy is about out of it, since his fake with Corbett. I didn't see the fight, and only speak of what I’ve heard. I have to laugh when I think how I ‘conned’ myself when I lost to McCoy. I taught him all ho knows, and when he proposed a match, I knew I could lick him In a few rounds— two rounds, easy. So ^pald no attention to my training and went Into the ring to find him trained to the minute. After the first five rounds, if a man had held up a million dollars and asked me to run over and get it in a hurry, I couldn't have done it. But I’ll fight McCoy or any other man living at 158 pounds, and wager all the money he can bring that I win.“When I trained Jeffries for his fight with Fitzsimmons I was able to put him on to all of Fits’ tricks, as Fit* and I had boxed each other thousands of times. I would like to see them get at It again. Fit* fought like a farmer that night—kept coming in and doing the leading—Inatead of using his old-time tactics. This fellow Jeffries is so infernal big, big and cunning, that he is hard to get at. I taught him that crouching business. Fit* was utterly unable to land an effective blow on him. However, Jeff seems to have gone back somewhat, as his last fights have been poor ones. But he is a good ’waiter,’ the best ever, and the fighter who can wait has a big advantage over the fellow who Is !n a hurry.Minneapolis Battle With Billy Smith.Ryan also spoke good-naturedly of his big battle In Minneapolis with “Mysterious Billy Smith- “Smith, he said, “is a great fellow, and It is wonderful how he has kept going, considering the way he lives. He la a mighty clever naan, too, a terrific puncher, and one of the greatest fighters that ever lived. I was very proud when I beat him.“To return to McCoy, he would stand a fair chance of licking the big ones, if he had a chance. Or it would be more accurate to aayJSF^Send all remittances to E. T. McCoy Is a wonderful performer until he meets with a little grief. He cannot stand a particle of punishment. Whether the defect is In his head or his heart I don’t know, but it is there. But he is one of these *in and out' fellows, a hard hitter, a big man and very clever. But he’s not in it any more.Ryan says he feels as young as he ever did, and that he ought to be “good” for several years more. I know that I am not fooling myself. he said. “For I am fighting all the time, meeting young fellows and running up against hard propositions all the time, and If I was falling It would show in the end of the purse, the small end, which I never take.Of Ruhlin, who is to fight Jeffries, he thlnk3 pretty well, although he rather picks Jeffries to win. Ruhlin, he says, has a great left hand, which he knows how to use. Kid Broad, or Dave Sullivan he regards as the most likely men to go against Terry McGovern. At to-night's contest either Perry Werden or Professor A. F. Kasten will act as referee. There will be several Interesting preliminaries and the big battle will come off about 9:30.covSchGoafortDoeHASTINGS’ RINK WINSTlie St. Paul Curling Club Trophy Stuys in MinneapolisSam Hastings, of Minneapolis, cam© off with flying colors last night, capturing the St. Paiil Curling club trophy from his ancient foeman, W.
