Tigers Visit New CaneyAAA ConfrontationBY MIKE BRITON Eagle Sports WriterNEW CANEY - The AM Consolidated Tigers will be playing to stay alive for the 11-AAA zone playoffs when they travel to New Caney to meet the Eagles in a 7:30 p.m.confrontation.The Tigers, who are 2-4 in zone play, have four moregames in w hich to post a good enough zone record to secure second place in the north sector. Why are they shooting for second9With Tomball on top of things with a 6-0 zone mark, theTigers could only tie for firstplace if they won the remaining games and the Cougars lost the rest of their games. And, more important, is that second place earns the Tigers a berth in the zone playoffs.THE FIRST and second place teams in the north and south zones of 11-AAA will play a four-team playoff tournament to determine the district champ. The second place team of the south zone will meet the winner of the north zone and vice versa.Tied for second behind Tomball in the north zone are Huntsville and Navasota with identical 4-2 slates. The Tigers share third place with Brenham, who also has a 2-4 mark. At the bottom of the heap is the team which the Tigers are playing tonight. New Caney is winless in loop play at 0-6, despite a 13-11 season record.Consol handed the Eagles one of their worst defeats in north zone competition earlier this season in Tiger gym. But New Caney coach KenLARRY WILLIAMSTiger's Top ScorerJIM FOREMAN Consol StrategistFranklin said the Eagles' spirit hasn't dwindled because' of their poor zone record. “Our kids' morale is still high/’ he said.FRANKLIN COMPAREDthe Eagles to Rice University of the Southwest Conference saying, “We’ve had some close ones, but we just haven't been able to win one.”The Eagles played Tomball close in New -Caney, lost to Huntsville in overtime and fell to Navasota, 92-83, in a wild affair. So the Tigers had better not get their guards down. But every game from this point on is important for the Tigers. Consol coach Jim Foreman said before going into the Tomball game last Tuesday, “They’re (games) all big ones now.” Even though the Tigers are 2-4 a win tonight could be that first big step towards the second place spot.Consol hosts Huntsville and Navasota. their toughest remaining foes, and will travel to Brenham to play the Cubs. So the remainder of the schedule is in their favor, but they’ll have to have some help from the rest of the zone. Someone will have to beat Navasota and Huntsville along with the Tigers before Consol can claim even a tie for second.IN THE first New Caney-Consol meeting, the Eagles were bothered by the Tigers' hustling defense. Consol intimidated the bigger Eagle team and stymied their scoring!I%lt;■(See CONSOL, Page 13)Consol’s Steen PlaysBY MIKE BRUTON Eagle Sports WriterCOLLEGE STATION - Howcan a man who is only 6-1 be successful at playing the post position in basketball?Ask AM Consolidated'sPhilip Steen, because he goes out two nights a week and plays the post with a high degree of success in most cases.
