But he will no attend the battle for the following reason:jSmith has been holding out for a : raise and would not sign until he got j it. So when he met Comiskey yesterday and the proposition of the con ract was brought up. Smith demanded a raise of $500. Imagine his utter sur-i prise whe n Comiskey immediately said, I won’t give you $500, but I’ll raise it to $700.”It is related that Smith’s hand trem-'bled, he was so astonished, and all thoughts of asking permission to attend the bout faded away like a flash.I He seized a pen. slashed off his John Hancock, and then, when it was too late, remembered the coming fight. H didn't dare to say anything to Comis- j key, as the latters’ generosity had si- i lenced him. but he did raise a fearful roar when he got outside the hotel.The sequel will be awaited with interest.
