CAHAAgrees...IfBy BOB BRISCOEThe Canadian Amateur .Hockey Association is willing to give up the operation of Canada's National Hockey team to theJ newly-formed Hockey Canada; Corporation — but with certain ! strings attached. . . !Earl Dawson of Rivers, elect-j” ed president of the CAHA Saturday during the first day of the two-clay semi-annual meeting at, the Viscount Gort in Winnipeg, .said Sunday theCAHA executive committee wants to make certain itsposition as the governing bodyof amateur hockey in Canada is in no way harmed by' the transfer of operation of the Nationals.“The CAHA is recognized by the International Ice Hockey Federation and the National Hockey League as the governingbody of amateur hockey inCanada and I want it to retain that .position, the new' CAHA president said. Dawson succeeds Lloyd Pollock of Windsor, who resigned as president a few months ago because of business pressure. Dawson, as first vice-president, has been acting as president since the resignation.Dawson said the CAHA executive committee agrees with the Hockey Canada Corporation idea but “we want a clear understanding about he position of the CAHA and the corporation if the transfer takes place.Dawson and CAHA executive director Gordon Juckes will represent the CAHA at a meeting with the executive committee of the corporation on Feb. 3 in Ottawa. The Hockey Canada Corporation is an independent, nonprofit organization started with help from federal health minister John Munro. The corporation’s executive committee, besides the two-members from the CAHA, includes two members from he National Hockey League — one from Montreal Canadieos and the other from the Toronto Maple Leafs.Dawson said there are several points to be negotiated with the Hockey Canada Corporation and that there must be a clear understanding between the two groups. One, of course, is the futurestatus of the CAHA as the a | governing body of amateur it; hockey and another is the desire of the CAHA to ensure that the opportunity to play will- the Nationals is open to all boys in Canada. No doubt another point of negotiation will be the financing of the ' 1970 World Hockey championships — the final 15 games of which are to he played in Winnipeg — although Dawson didn’t say so.The CAHA president said the association has absorbed a S150,000 deficit caused by tiie operation of the National teamr-over the last five years and thatthe CAHA couldn’t be burdened indefinitely with the sponsoring of the Nationals.“In a sense, this has caused us to deprive other parts of our program of funds to which they are entitled,” he said.Dawson said the CAHA has been pushing the establishment of a corporation to operate the Nationals for about two years without much success and* he gave Health Minister Munro credit for establishing the corporation is less , than three months.
