30 Years AgoVANDAL CAGERS CLAIM NATIONAL SCORINGRECORD — The high-riding Miami High School basketball squad this week claimed a national inter-scholastic scoring record after three last weekend victories gave them a record of an average of 61.5 points per game on 862 markers scored in 14 games this year.Arch Ward, sports editor of the Chicago Tribune, backed their claim and said that the local record was hard to believe. He said that the Champaign. III. high school team had an extremely high record last year when they had an average of 49 points per game.The Vandals, who dropped their second game of the season to Phoenix Union before they started their string of victories, have limited opponents to an average of 34.7 and a total of 486 markers.Last Thursday night the local squad defeated Morenci by a score of 57-45; trounced Clifton 71-46 Friday night and dropped Duncan by a score of 52-47 Saturday night.In the Morenci tilt, Tony Regalado went on a scoring spree to account for 24 points and was followed by sharpshooter Tony Gutierrez with 15.At Clifton, Freshman Joe Gutierrez scored 23 points to lead the Vandals. Tony Gutierrez was high point man for the Vandals with 19 points in the Duncan clash.The Vandals, hotter than a 4th of July firecracker under the able coaching of newcomer Ernest Kivisto. have stretched their winning streak to 12 straight games. 13 out of 14 tries, 10 of them conference tilts.Sparking the Miami offense are two sharpshooting forwards. Tony Regalado and Tony Gutierrez who have scored 366 points between them. 'Hie Vandals also boast one of the best defensive men in Eastern Conference in John Peterson, 6-foot, 3-inch center. Also listed as very able men are Paul Mirales and Eddie Miles, guards. Capable reservesinclude Ben Salcines, Bill Lutich, Bill Paul, Joe Gutierrez,Albert Sierra, Manuel Delgadillo. Lupe Acevedo and Bob Davis.The Vandals travel to Thatcher Friday night and to Safford Saturday night of this week.
