MJHLwaivesbyeisinto western finalThe winner of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League will not get a bye into the western final of the Memorial Cup playdowns. This action followed a submission made to the CAHA meeting by MJHL commissioner Jimmy Dunn requesting t h e above on financial grounds.Dunn put forward a three-part proposal which stated: (1) that Manitoba and Thunder Bay meet in the first round playoffs; (2) the winner of that series advance to the western final; (3) Manitoba be allowed three pickups for the Thunder Bay series.Part of the proposal met approval from CAHA officials, who agreed that the previous playoff system, which had been set up at the CAHA annual meeting in May, would end in a financial bath for the organization.Delegates felt that it was generally conceded that Saskatchewan and Alberta would i c e tougher teams than those from Manitoba, Thunder Bay and British Columbia. If, as in the playoffs that were set down in May, Thunder Bay met Saskatchewan and B.C. met Alberta both series would be weak. However, if Manitoba met Thunder Bay it was hoped that only one series might be considered weak.Vice - president Fred Page stated: “We definitely made a mistake in May and it has to be corrected.”In a general discussion amongst all the delegates, it appeared that the first two parts of the Manitoba proposal would be agreeable but the ThunderBay group was not in favor of the third part.I It was agreed that the whole structure of the western playdowns be changed and the western executives were forced to return to thctr playoff committee. After a three and a half hour debate the western dates were decided by the committee and they returned to the main meeting room where the dates for both eastern and western playoffs were formally accepted for junior (Memorial Cup) and senior (Allan Cup).In a telephone conversation Sunday night, Dunn stated that the change in the playoff system would mean that the MJHL must chop the length of either the season or the playoffs. He added that he will meet with club representatives today to discuss the situation.Present plans call for the season to end March 15 and then a best-of-five semi-final involving second and third place clubs. The winner would meet the first place finishers in a best-of-seven final.NATIONAL LEAGUEMontreal —Chicago —Toronto — Detroit New York _ Boston ----W L23 32 23 15 18 16 20 16 14 21 11 29T F A Pt*7 329 104 535 144 110 5111 125 108 476 118 109 46 9 106 137 37 4 96 150 26WESTERNWPortland —Seattle ----Vancouver . victoria ____Los Angeles _ 18 San Francisco 1724242020LEAGUE L T F15 4 15817 3 131 4 167 1 153 1 148 1 159202324 24A Pts130 52 118 51 162 44 157 41 167 37182 35MANITOBA JUNIORVV L T F A PtsBraves _____ 19 11 5 138 106 43Rangers ____ 16 15 5 154 131 37Monarchs — 14 17 5 116 123 33Warriors _____ 13 19 3 112 160 29SASKATCHEWAN .11 MOIIW L T F A Ptsno a k Ann ooFINAL DATES APPROVEDWESTERN MEMORIAL (UPSeries A — British Columbia vs. Saskatchewan in a best-of-five series.Series H — Winner of series A vs. Alberta in a best-of-seven series.Series c — Thunder Bay vs. Manitoba in a best-of-seven series to open In Manitoba Wednesday, April 7, and Friday, April 9 followed by games at Thunder Bav Sunday April 11, Monday, April 12, Wednesday, April 14 and Friday, April 16.
