The Eagles turned up the heat and outscored Elgin 18-10 at the end of the half, matched the visitors 10-10 in the third period and then outpaced them 12-10 in the last period.DAVIS HAD 18 points for Hearne, followed by Darrell Pierce and Bruce Henry, with 10 each.Milton Baker and Jack Mathews were high point men for Elgin with 16 points apiece.Hearne is now 6-2 in district warfare and 14-13 on the year. That saying must be true, because the Tigers were not awed by the quick, talented Rattlers. When the gym was bursting with tension, with both teams1 fans going wild, the Tigers kept their poise and walked away with their biggest win of the season.Consol’s Ronnie Morgan and Pat Cartwright hit clutch free throws in the final seconds of the game, while the Navasota fans yelled, stomped and did everything they could to break the Tiger cagers’ concentration. The game was filled with pressure and emotion. The Rattlers’ Nicky Nelms was ejected from the game with 40 seconds left when he lost his temper and started to exchange words with an AM Consolidated cheerleader.THERE WAS some positive emotion also. like the emotion Consol coach Jim Foreman described when the Tigers called timeout with the score reading 54-53 Navasota’s way with 1:26 to go in the game. Foreman said Larry Williams kept telling his teammates not to worry because, “We are going to win.”The whole Tiger team played well, but the key to the exciting Tiger win was in the play of Philip Steen and Williams. Williams led the scoring assault with 19 points and played extremely well during the crucial minutes of the third and fourth quarters. But Steen was outstanding the entire game. The 6-1 senior pulled down 15 rebounds and scored 17 points, and did a good job defensively on the Navasota big men William Mason and Bennie Anderson. At the start of the game when the Rattlers jumped out to a 16-11 first quarter lead, it looked like another long night for Consol. But good defense pulled the Tigers back and the score was knotted 30-30 at ha If time.was Foreman and the Tiger contingent that was filled with elation.“It was team play,” Foreman said with his face still showing the happiness generated by the win. “They (Tigers) did a tremendous job,” assistant coach Larry Linder said smiling. “We kept making the plays when we had to,” he added.Consol will host league leading Tomball Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. with this inspiring victory still in their memories. “I’m really looking forward to playing them (Tomball). We’ve got a good shot at second place if we win the rest of them,” Foreman said. The Tigers are 11-15 on the season, and 2-3 in zone play with the win, while the Rattlers are 12-9 and 3-2.ConsolWilliamsShaferSteenCartwrightMorganDaytonWaldonTotalsfgm fga 817121323ftm fta3 42 3 34 2 2 23 00 00 12 16pf tp33 2 24 1 319417462618 58NavasotaGlennNelmsAndersonMasonMaxeySaulsTotalsfgm fga282920.23ftm fta 02 4 62 3 35 12 00 10 18pf tp 2 4Vikes Massacre HaplessYellow Jackets. 87-54BY ROBERT CESSNA Eagle Sports WriterCLEBURNE—Before their 15-4A clash here Friday night, Cleburne coach Jeff Cody called the Bryan Vikings a state contender and the Vikes re-affirmed Cody’s thoughts, as they thrasheci the hapless Yellow Jackets, 87-54.Bryan, behind a stout press, jumped to a quick 11-2 lead and left little doubt as to the superior team. Cleburne, however, didn’t get the ball past midcourt the next10 minutes.Carter then tied the game on a long baseline jumper. Seconds later, Woods got an easy layup off a Dickey steal. Carter then stole the inbounds pass and fed Hunter who layed it up and in and in the process was fouled.AFTER HUNTER completed the three-point play, Dickey again stole the ball and fed a wide open Carter. Wilson ended the splurge with a pair of freebies with 6:42 left in the quarter.“Most teams we play, that first quarter sets the pace,” Bryan coach Bobby Perry said. “We relaxed after the first period and I don’t think Cleburne threatened again as far as the score is concerned.”If the 27-16 lead was not enough, Bryan scored the first 17 points of the second quarterto up the score to 43-17.PERRY USED his wholebench the rest of the way, substituting freely against the hapless Yellow Jackets. Twelve players saw action and eleven scored.“I think our ability to control the boards was the key,” the Vike boss said. Bryan pulled down 52 rebounds in the game, with the 6-10 Woods hauling in 20. “Rudy did an outstanding job, he rebounded well and shot his free throws well,” Perry said.Woods was also the game’s high scorer with 18 points; Carter was next with 17; and Dickey added 11 before fouling out.
