More Than 12,000 View S-Mobile FeatureWinner of TC 250 Averages ©ver 50 mphBY SUE PERSZYK R-E News StaffOccasional rain and balmy 37 degree temperatures didn’t dampen the spirits of spectators or drivers during the third running of the TC 250 . snowmobile race Saturday. In fact, this year’s race proved to be the most exciting and toughest competition in the history cf the $15,000 race.The parade lap, led by Linda Sue Kish. Miss Michigan and Tiger baseball star, Mickey Stanley, began at exactly 10 a.m. before a crowd of some 12,000 spectators. Four- hours and 58 minutes later, the winning1 team of George Pattullo. Roland Hanes and Roger Voll-mar took the checkered flag, running the race in a record average of 50.335 m.p.h., two ■miles an hour faster than last years winning time.. The team’s machine, a Polaris, was held up only twice during the race, for two d r i v e - b e 11 changes. They received $5,000 in first place money, $430 in lap money and $1,250 in contingency money.It wasn’t an easy victory for the Caro trio whose win gave them victories in the first two races of Michigan’s Triple Crown. They were the winners last week-in the Thunder Bay 250 Race in Alpena and arc now on their way to the qualifying trials for the third race in the Triple Crown, the 1-500 at Sault Ste, Marie.The track, in perfect condition the night before the race, began to thaw under the warm Saturday temperatures and at midway afternoon there was nearly a foot of water in places, making control difficult for drivers.However it was expert driving that prevented collisions throughout the race. At numerous times there were as many as five machines stalled in' the middle of the track and these drivers had to wade through ankle deep water to push their vehicle out of the path- of oncoming drivers. The race was completed without an injury.Excitement reached a peak during the second half of the race as spectators jammed the snowfences to watch the three lead machines driven by Hanes. Roger .Griner of Interlochcn and Dale Furst of Breckenridge battle it out for first place.At the 200 lap mark Griner held the lead ahead of Furst by only 35 seconds. But by the 240th lap, Hanes took over with Furst running second and Griner in third- Ten laps later Furst took the lead only 16 seconds ahead of Hanes,With only about 20 laps to go, Furst, who led for a total of 118 laps was still in the lead until his Yamaha suffered a twisted crankshaft and the driver from Breckenridge dropped back into tenth place and Hanes took over.
