VikingsBy BILL KAC ZOR Daily News Sports WriterFort Walton Beach High School coasted to a pair of easy victories Friday and Saturday as the Vikings began to show signs of reaching maturity.Friday night they drubbed Chumuckia 79-63 in a road game and then came home Saturday night to post another big win against Walnut Hill 70-54.The two wins now give the Vikings a 5-8 season record. Asa result ot their loss, the Walnut Hill Eagles dropped to below.500 with an 8-9 mark.Fort Walton Beach Coach Hal Wyatt holds hope for at least a break even record in the Vikings second season of basketball. However, they face a rugged schedule the rest of the way, starting Monday when they host Century, which boasts a 16-1 record.The win against Chumuckia brings Fort Walton Beach fullOkaloosa Walton Junior College basketball coach Ray Ross found out that with only a seven man squad a team cannot afford foul trouble. However, Ross and the Raiders found this out the hard way this weekend.Both Friday and Saturday night the Raiders lost three players one of which was ejected from the game and consequently suffered back to back loses.Friday O-W traveled to Madison for a contest with Division I foe North Florida and came out on the short end of a 102-86 score. Saturday the Raiders moved down to Lake City and found their backs against the wall again as the Timberwolves handed tham a 90-78 setback.The two losses evened O-W's seasonal ledger at 9-9 while Frl day’s defeat dropped its division record to 1-3.The Rossmen took their only lead of the eve ning against Lake City with 7:15 left in the opening half when a field goal by Robbie Williams gave tham a 20-19 advantage.This, however, was short lived as the Timberwovles came right back and at the intermission led 35-31.Lake City continued to pour it on in the opening minutes of the second half and with 10:10 left took its largest lead of the night, 71-47.The Raiders were not to be out done and displaying a non-Hnfoatict attituHn ant hark intnseven free throws for 21 points. Arnzer followed with 14 markers while Deardorff Mitchell and Willie Louden chipped In with 14, 12 and 11 respectively.Lake City placed all five starters in the two digit bracket with Roger Atkinson netting 21 and Warbington 19 to pace the attack.Friday night it was much the same story for the aggressive O-W team. After jumping off to a 41-39 hafltime advantage the Raiders ran into foul trouble and weren’t able to keep up with the Sentinels.Mitchell left the game in the opening half due to fouls and in the second half the Raiders lost Jeff Roser and their big man Williams.This, coupled with the hot second half shooting of North Florida’s Robert Thomas 19 points spelled the difference* in the con test.Williams was again O-W’s big-man in the scoring column as the freshman center collected 14 field goals and seven free throw for .35 points.Deardorff and Arnzen also broke the double figure barrier with 17 and 14 points respective-iy-The Raiders were extremely cold from the floor both nights as then only managed to hit on 34 of 82 shots Friday and 28 of 66 Saturday.OWJC will stay on the road as they travel to Marianna lues day for a Division 1 contestcircle from the first meeting between the two schools last year; the first game the Vikings every played and their first loss. The vengeance is now complete for the Vikings as they have won both ends of their home and away series with Chumuckia.Rick Clements was the Vikes’ big man Saturday night as he put 21 points on the board against Walnut Hill. He was one of four Vikings in double figures. The others wre Paul Hamrick and Randy Carter, 15 each,and Rick Fitzpatrick with 12.In the Chumuckia game, Car ter led the way with 24 as five Vikings hit in two figures. Also scoring big were Fitzpatrick 16, Hamrick 13, Clements and Mike Bates 10 each.Walnut Hill got off to a badstart against the Vikings andhad to play catch-up all night but never was able to make much of a dent in the Viking lead. Neither team hit very well in the eariy going, but the Vik ings got unt racked first and spurted to a 14-5 first quarter lead.Coach Wyatt said he was con fident his team could win, but did not expect Walnut Hill go to down so easily. He theorized that the long bus ride might have taken something out of the Eagles, who had virtually no bench strength with only six men in uniform.Wyatt said credit for the turn around in the Vikings’fortune can be given to a general improvement in their quality of play.
