JURY IS SIFTING BANKER’S CHARGEI • - - ’ * * r“ *Inquiry Begun Into Alleged Relation of Federal Officials and Lewinsohn.Chicago, III., Jan. 24.—Inquiry by a grand jury into the insinuations and charges circulating about the federal building that various government officials have received bribes in the past from “Sol” Lewinsohn, missing private banker, was begun yesterday under the direction of Assistant United ^States District Attorney David D. Stansbury.; In the course of the day all the rela-j tives of Jai-k lt;ilwiinii, -negro pugilist, j were taken to the grand jury room for interrogation concerning the chargesi that Jbhneon transferred $25,000 toILewinsohn 15 months ago when arrest-i ed by the United States authorities. Barney Furey, the pugilist’s former trainer, and other persons connected with him during his ring career, also , were summoned as witnesses. Part of ; the testimony offered is said to have concerned the official actions of Charles 1 F. De Woody, investigator of the Unit-j ed States department of justice, in i bringing about the arrest of Johnson ! when he was fleeing to Canada for the first time.! When the grand jury meets again j Monday an inquiry will be started into ! the part Mr. De Woody played in bring-| ing about the arrest of “Sid” McHie1 two years ago during the activities ofthe government against “bucket shop”operations.Another feature of the investigation will relate to the charges that a system pf blackmail has obtained in connection with the government's interests in many of the cases. These charges, however, are vague and uncertain so far, and one of the aims of the assistant district attorney is to trace them to their source.1 District Attorney Wilkerson denied ! yesterday that he had boycotted United States Commissioner Mark A. Foote. The latter bad complained in a public statement that he was compelled to borrow money from Lewinsohn.
