Local and area basketball teams are either at the halfway part of the season or a game or two past that mark. Most teams this year are playing 20, 21 and 22-game seasons and all are aiming for a .500 or above won-loss mark by the time it’s all over because that's what’s needed to gain a PIAA postseason playoff slot.At this moment of the season, most teams have basked in the warmth of victory more often than have they been froxen by defeat.Going into Tuesday’s games, many of which were not played because of the weather, Franklin was at 6-5, the Grove was 7-5, Cranberry 5-5, Venango Christian 5-6, Oil City 0-11, Titusville 0-2, Lake view 6-4, Grove City 10-3, A-C Valley 11-0, Maplewood 10-2 and Cochranton 3-8On the girls’ ledger, Franklin held a 12-1 slate, Rocky Grove was 7-6, Oil City 0-12, Cranberry 8-1, Venango Christian 9-3, Titusville 6-5, Grove City 10-2, Lakeview 9-4, Cochranton 6-4,and Maplewood 5-4.In order to be successful over a basketball season on the high school level, much is required — offense, defense, rebounding, assists and scoring. Scoring leaders gain more headlines on every level of basketball than do others who may excel in rebounding, blocking shots, stealing the ball or dishing out assists.Scoring in any game is always the aim. The headlines don’t go to the persons chalking up the assist, or throwing the block which springs the back for the TD, they just go to those who score field goals and TDs.It’s unfortunate that only the scorers are singled out by the media but they are because the readers and viewers don’t seem to care who threw the blocks or who it was that had the good feed, they just want to know who scored and how many times. The teams which sport the best records at this time of the season always manage to have one or two good point-pro-ducera.We’ve singled out the top one or two scorers on each of the previously mentioned teams, and where balanced scoring has been achieved, the teams with the better balance usually have the better records.A-C Valley is undefeated and they’re led by Randy Armagost with 207 and Keith Rabb with 183 points in 11 games. Grove City is 10-3 and the Eagles' big gunner is Pat Cavanaugh with 272 points in 13 games.Other top scorers and their teams are: Tom O’Toole 129 and Gary Shingledecker with 186 for Franklin; Tracy LaBowof Titusville with 205 points; Brian Gotses of VCHS with 149; Pat Adams 173, Steve Adams 167, and Duane Thomas 154 for Rocky Grove; Scott Umstead117 and Tim Kelly 118 of Cranberry; and Tom Hering of Maplewood with 157.On the girls’ ledger, the top scorers are: Jenni Patterson of Cochranton with 313; Valerie Hricsina of Franklin with 225; Jane Hujduk of Oil City wi’h 206; Dawn Cauvel 197 and Julie Hovis 192 of Rocky Grove; Kim Hopkins of Titusville with 157; Peggy Hogue of Venango Christian 137; and Renee Mithcell 99, Melanie Hansen 104 and Kristi Flinchbaugh 88 of Cranberry.Quite a few teams were idled by the severe winter weather of the past couple days. Several teams did play and got through the road trip in good shape.Up in Corry last Friday night the Beavers were supposed to meet Harborcreek at Harbor-creek for a swim meet. Road conditions weren’t the best but someone decided the meet must be met. Four members of the Corry team were later injured, two critically, in a crash on the way to Harborcreek.Weather conditions that day were similar to those locally which caused many of the Monday and Tuesday games to be rescheduled. Commendations should be given to those ADs and principals who said no to traveling on Monday and Tuesday nights. The game can always be played at some othertime.Super maniacsYesterday, more than half a million happy fans lined Market Street to honor the San Francisco 49ers, 38-16 victors over the Miami Dolphins in Super BowlXIX.The parade, which was held under the watchful eyes of 400police officers, marked the official end of the revelry which began moments after the game ended Sunday evening at Stanford Stadium, about 35 miles to the south.San Francisco police reported arresting scores of people through the night on a variety of charges, most for being drunk in public, and emergency rooms treated a number for minor injuries received in brawls. The parade too, had its incidents, but for the most part, it was peaceful. On Monday, two people waiting to welcome home the team got into an argument over a 49ers’ baseball cap while standing in front of City Hall. One of the two involved pulled a knife and stabbed the other guy plus two more people who tried to intervene. The knifer was later arrested and faces a variety of charges. Only one person was seriously injured.
