ippreriation Banquet Pinnacle of Fantastic BU Football YearGovernor Dolph Briscoe has declared Saturday, January 25 as “Baylor Bear Day’’ in the state of Texas.Secretary of State Mark White, a Baylor alumnus, will present the certificate at the Waco Citizens Appreciation banquet being held that evening at 7 p.m. in the Waco Convention Center.Waco legislator Lane Denton was instrumental in getting the Governor to honor the Baylor Bears.Joe Faterno, coach ofPenn State, will be speaker for the banquet. His Nittany Lions defeated the Baylor Bears in their first Cotton Bowl in history. The Bears won the 1974 Southwest Conference Championship for the first time in 50 years.Paterno is being flown to Waco in a private jet and will arrive around 4:30 p.m. He will attend a private party hosted by Bill Bailey prior to the banquet.Bailey, chairman of the banquet, said that at noonWednesday, 1125 tickets had been sold and he would predict 1300 would attend the affair.Ticket cut-off time is 5 p.m. Thursday. The $25 per person tickets are on sale at local banks and savings and loan institutions and The Baylor ticket office and Baylor Bear Club office, both at Baylor stadium.Bailey said, “I am very pleased with ticket sales, in fact, I think it is fantastic.’’A portion of the ticket proceeds will be used to improve Brooks Hall to house #11 Baylor athletes.Other special guests to attend the banquet will be Wilbur Evans, Executive Vice-President of the Cotton Bowl and Administrative, Assistant for the Southwest Conference.Clark Nealon, sports editor emeritus of the Houston Post, will present the Houston Posts Award for theSouthwest Conference Offensive Player of the Vear to Steve Beaird.Bailey .said, “I am assuming President Gerald Ford is not coming to the banquet, because we have had no word on whether he is accepting or declining the invitation. I am going to try and call him Thursday.’’Morris Frank, Houston Post columnist and humorist will be the master of ceremonies for the event.
