Navasota Wins—(Continued from page IB)BUT IT DIDN'T take a last second shot such as Heame used last Friday night to down the Tigers.Navasota, which had won only once previously in five zone starts and lost two close games to Consol, did a superior job of sitting on the lead once they got it.The Tigers chipped away at times but after cutting the lead to two points, 32-30, with 2:04 left in the third period Navasota pulled away to a 40-31 lead before Consolidated hit anotherfield goal.Consolidated missed out on a couple of critical chances to stay in the contest early in the fourth quarter. The Tigers went to the free throw line for a pair of two-shot fouls, but came away with only one success. The Rattlers led 34-30 on Darrell Lauter’s rebound jumper after three quarters and kept the pressure on the Tigers with strong board play from Lauter, Edgar Branch and Cheyenne Hall.“I thought they whipped us onboth ends on the boards,” Foreman said.HUBERT WILLIAMS, whoplayed the complete second half with four fouls, followed up a missed shot to put the Rattlers on top 36-30 and then Hall hit a short jumper to make it 38-31.The Rattlers were in no hurry to relinquish the ball in the final quarter, using a minute and ten seconds without a shot, foul or turnover at one stretch used up 40 seconds before Branch hit a jumper to make it 40-31. Consolidated pulled to within five points twice in the final minute but two free throws by James Chatman with 1:16 to play gave Navasota a 45-38 lead.Consolidated led 8-2 at the outset but did not score until Navasota had taken the beforementioned 14-8 lead. Nearly a full quarter, 6 minutes and 53 seconds, passed before the Tigers scored again. The Rattlers beat the Tigers back on defense and got some good shots offensively. Consolidated was never able to get its press organized. We were reacting to slowly on defense,” Foreman said ‘Wedidn’t react as quickly as weshould have. They didn’t beat our press because we never were able to get into it.”NAVASOTA USED a sagging zone to befuddle the Tigers into another low shooting percentage and prevented them from working the ball inside.“We didn’t shoot well at all, said Foreman. “We took a lot of bad shots that we aren’t going tohit a good percentage of,anytime.”“If I had to say the difference in the ball game, it was that I didn’t have their patternsworked out correctly and therefore we weren’t doing some things we should have,”Foreman said. The Rattlers, also, used balanced scoring to tick the Tigers.Branch, who was held in check by the Tigers, still got his 15 points with a superb shooting performance close to the hoop. Williams had seven in the first quarter and finished with 12 andI^auther had 10.KENNY OLREE had a strong game for the Tigers on both ends of the floor, scoring 13 points and coming up with several key rebounds and defensive plays, which could have enabled Consol to get back into the game had they been able to hit consistently. The Tigers were virtuallynullified inside offensively as Alex Walker did not score and Consol got the ball to him no more than four times all night.“Our kids tried hard,” said Foreman. “We worked hard but we didn’t play that well. It’s just like I told my kids. It’s now a matter of pride and how much you want it. If you want you can make a good showing.”Consol won the junior varsity game, 50-42 with Rickey I^ewis scoring 22 points. The Tigers travel to Brenharn Friday night.navasotafgmfta ftmP*tpWilliams36 7412Bryant00 010Chatman02 510Branch71 2115Lauter42 2310Hall10 012Searcy20 214Totals1711 181145Score By Qrts11 1310 11 45CONSOLfgmfta ftmpftpTreat33 419Olree61 2413Owen20 334Hampton20 024Carroll10012Tank24 528Totals168 161340Quarters810 1210 40(Continued from page IB)the Vikings couldn’t seem to contain the Wildcat whiz Bryan tried to play more man for man defense against the Wildcats than they normally do, but where they could stop Berry, President took up the slackBarrett and l,arry (larretl both played good defense for the Vikes, but it was not to be for the boys in the blue and silverTuesday nightJOHN HOUSTON ALSO BROKE into the double figures for the Vikings as he found the range for 10 points, followed by Mike Williams with eight.
