Sport director resignsOTTAWA (CP) - Lou Lefaive is resigning as director of Sport Canada to become the first president of Hockey Canada. In acknowledging the move Monday night, Lefaive observed:“Some people might consider it jumping from the frying pan into the fire. I prefer to call it moving from one challenge to another.Federal director of fitness and amateur sport since 1968, Lefaive will be no stranger to the high-pressure Hockey Canada challenge he undertakes Friday since he has been a director from the time the organization was formed in 1969.In fact he has been Hockey Canada chairman since Doug Fisher quit the job several months ago.It has been his chore to guide the organization through a series of upheavals including withdrawal from HockeyCanada of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association, responsible for all amateur hockey in the country, in a battle centred on jurisdiction over international competition.Hockey Canada is responsible for Canada’s national team and professional international competitions while the CAHA handles all other international events. He said he considers hockey too important to Canada for the differences not to be resolved.Among the tasks Lefaive has set himself is development of a national university hockey league to act as a feeder for the Canadian national team.Although such a league needs full approval of the general membership, the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union last week approved in principle a tiering system that could lead to such a circuit by next fall.
