Martin added 20 points to the Beaver total, and pulled down 14 rebounds.(Photo b Ran Henry)By RICHARD MYERSThe Beavers jumped out to a quick lead and pulled steadily away to defeat the Princeton Tigers 71-52 Tuesday night in the second meeting of the season between the two old rivals at the Brushfork Armory.The win pushed Beaver’s mark to 7-4 on the hardwood campaign while the Tigers worksheet now stands at 4-5.Fred Martin came up with one of his better performances as he canned 20 points and several of those came from around the key. Helping Martin out in the scoring column was Pat Haye with 15 and Jim Manns came off the bench in a reserve role and netted 13 for Beaver.The Tigers were paced by Poochie Gardner with 19 and Ernest Gilliard added 12.Both teams have seen better nights on the hardwoods as Beaver turned the ball over 30 times while the Tigers had 18 turnovers.Beaver put the ball in the twines on 27 of 62 shots for 44 per cent while the Tigers could only hit on 20 of 66 from the floor for 30 per cent.The Beavers biggest edge came in rebounding as they grabbed off 51 loose caroms to Princeton’s 26Martin and Goodman pulled down 14 and nine respectively to pace‘Beaver on the boards.The Tigers started off the night behind at the outset as Beaver’s Pat Haye tossed in a technical foul shot. The officials ruled a Princeton played dunked the ball during the warmup period.Barry Williams gunned in a bucket for the Tigers seconds later to give Princeton a 2-1 advantage but that was the last time of the night they held the leadGrundy WhipsBattle 50-40Greg Rowe led a secondperiod Grundv surge Tuesday night as the Golden Wavewhipped John Battle 50-40 atFred Martin tossed in a couple of charitv shots to give Beaver a 3-2 lead and seconds later Martin chalked up another bucket to run the margin to 5-2.The Beavers continued to build on their lead through the remainder of the first frame and were on top 18-10 before Poochie Gardner rang up two points for the Tigers on a long one hander to make it Beaver 18-12 at the close of the opening chapter.The Beavers rang up six unanswered points at the start of the second quarter to charge out to a 24-12 advantage. Princeton scored on a basket by Ernest Gilliard and a charity throw by Williams to make it 24-15 with 2:40 left in the half.Beaver ran their margin to 30-15 near the close of the seccond period and went out on top 32-18 at halftime.The Tigers cut down Beavers lead to twelve points midwaythrough the third quarter at 39-27 and looked to be on the verge of a comeback before quick buckets by Haye, Jim Manns and Martin gave the Beavers a 49-29 lead and the game was all over but the countdown. Beaver led 51-36 going into the final chapter.John Chmara’s cagers held a12-14 point lead through most of the final period with theirbiggest lead coming at 63-42 with just over three minutes togo.The contest finished in a foul shooting match with Beaver on top 71-52 at the buzzer.The scoring:Princeton — Gardner 8 3-9 19, B.
