Missing is Derek Gumming.Jim Rey Rewrites RecordsMass start, age class- speed skating championships were held over the weekend at the Sargent Park Oval.The top class in the men's division was won by Jim Key of the Winnipeg Speed Skating Club, who bested Brian Deans in all five distances, and set a Canadian record for 3,000 metres at five minutes, 24.6 seconds and a Manitoba record for 1,500 metres of two minutes, 26.4 seconds.Jim Johnson of River Heights had little opposition in the intermediate men’s class and set a Canadian mark for 1,000 metres of one minute 38.8 seconds.Other age class winners were River Heights' skaters Tom Swanlund, Joey Hildes and Derek Cumming for junior, .midget and peewee boysand St. James skaters Michael Busb and Don White for juvenile and bantam boys.The senior ladies’ division was not contested as the top skaters were in Europe. Best times were recorded by Kathy Vogt of River Heights in the junior division, with Barb Johnston second. Vogt tied the Canadian • record of 48.1 seconds for 500 metres.Marg Hanson won all the intermediate ladies’ events and set Canadian records in the 500 and 1,500-metre events. Shawna Hicks of St. James set two Canadian records, 19.9 seconds for 200-metres, 39 seconds for 400 metres in winning the juvenile girls’ section.Nancy Durnin won the 800-metre distance in the race of the meet.;Gillian Johnson of River Heights was a strong winner in the midget level and Marg Sta-pley and Jamie Mackenzie tied in th£ bantam girls’ division. Mackenzie won the skate-off by a few inches to claim the trophy.
