Yarhouse Team Wins First Leg Of Tri-CrownALPENA (UPI) — At least Dave Yarhouse of Alpena had some consolation Saturday as he lay in his hospital room with a broken leg.Yarhouse was injured last week in an accident during time trials for the Thunder Bay 250 snowmobile race that he won last year.It kept him out of the first leg of snowmobile racing’s triple crown, but his speedy Artie Cat recovered in time for backup driver Dan Hayes of Rose City to win the 500-lap event.Frantic work by Yarhouse’s crew put the machine back together in time for the race that ended with Hayes pulling away from Rhett Butler of Portland, Mich., to take the $4,000 first prize out of the $14,000 purse.Jerry Adamowski of Essexville led most of the way until the 470th lap, but he gradually faded to finish fourth in the generally safe race viewed by B,000 spectators in cold but clear weather.Behind Butler in the field of 35 came Randy DeWitt of Rudyard, and Bob Kruger of Alpena finished fifth. The second through fifth place snowmobiles were all Yamahas.Next for the professional racers is the Traverse City 250 Jan. 29, and two weeks later they move to the 1-500 race in Sault Ste. Marie.ALPENA (UPI) — Top 10 finishers, machines driven and laps completed in Saturday’s Thunder Bay 250 snowmobile race at the Alpena Fairgrounds:1. Dan Hayes, Rose City, Arctic Cat, 500.2.
