Tigers Battling To Stay in RaceBY \1IKE BRUTON Eagle Sports WriterCOLLEGE STATION - For the AM Consolidated Tigers, tonight’s game against Brenham will be a battle to geteven. The Tigers won’t be seeking revenge on the Cubs for anything, but trying to get their north zone record at .500 with a victory when they host Brenham in Tiger gym with the junior varsity tipoff coming at 7:30. With the Consol loop record at 1-2, they’re fighting hard to stay in the zone race with a win.Consol coach Jim Foreman described the Brenham team as big and quicker than New Caney, an earlier Tiger foe. The Tigers are probablymeet with full approval of the Kice fans and alumnis, who question his seven years absence from coaching and his brief head coaching experience .“If you hire an engineenng professor,” one backer said, “and you say ‘he’s been out of engineering for seven years but he’s such a fine fellow,* you’d be laughed off campus.”Another alumnus said, “I think they’re hiring him more for his ability as a money raise for Rice than his football coaching ability.’’No. 1redeemed itself with a thrilling 68-67 upset of rival North Carolina Sunday to move up to 11th with 292 points.By The Associated PressThe Top TwentyteamsinThe Associated Press collegebasketball poll withfirst placevotes in parenthesesseasonrecords through Sundayandto-tai points Points based on20-18 16 14 12 10 9 0 7 6 5 4 3 2 11 Indiana (62)1401.2582 Maryland13 11.0333 Marquette1119524 Nev L Vegas (1) 18 0 8165 N Carolina12 25926 UCLA13 25767.Rutgers105418 Washington14 15169 St John's13 150510 Tennessee12 230211 N C St12 229212. With the Tigers playing a man-to-man defense the Cubs may plan a different offensive attack. But Foreman is sure of the Tigers’ ability to handle whatever the Cubs might throw at them,“I’m real confident that our kids can adjust to whatever offensive set they (Cubs) get in,” Foreman said. “We’ve got♦o be real alert.”ONE WOULD have toquestion a team’s morale when going into a tough physical game as this one is forecasted to be. Here again, Foreman expressed optimism concerned the mental attitude of the Tigers at this point in the season.“They (Tigers) feel like everytime they go out there, they can win. We’re at a point where we’ve got to win,” Foreman exlaimed. The Consol coach said the Tigers had a spirited workout yesterday, so apparently they're ready to snap back. You have to be ready to retaliate when you drop two of your first three zone games. But Foreman is not dismayed by the Tigers’ disadvantageous start. Because he said the zone race is tough enough that every team in it will be challenged before season’s end, and the breaks might swing in Consol’s favor if they can produce some wins.“THE TEAM that comes out on top in this zone is going to have to get a few breaks, and maybe lady luck will swing our way at this vital part of the season,” he said. The Tigers’ two top offensive threats will be Philip Steen and Larry Williams, both averaging 10.9 points per game to lead Consol’s scoring. In the starting lineup with Steen and Williams will be PatCarwnght (5.8), Scott Shafer (8.9) and Ronnie Morgan (5.8).
