FojcFremont, Blakesburg oustedValley to Empire semifinalsBy ALAN HOSKINS Courier Sports EditorHEDRICK - Fox Valley used contrasting victories to reach the semifinals of the 1971 Empire Conference basketball tournament here Tuesday night.All-0 finish enabled the Fox Valley girls to escape Fremont’s upset bid 52-41 in the opener while the Fox Valley boys got off to a fast start in the nightcap to post a 70-35 win.In semifinal games tonight, Moulton-Udell’s defendingchamps will play the Hedrick girls at 7 o’clock with Fremont meeting Hedrick’s reigning champs at 8:30 p.m. Winners will advance to Saturday’s finals against winners of Friday’s semifinals which match the Fox Valley and Blakesburg girls and Moulton-Udell and Fox Valley boys.Fremont girls blanked The Fox Valley girls, unbeaten in five loop games, had a rugged struggle against underdog Fremont, leading only 10-8, 24-22 and 36-35 at thequarters. But a defense led by Sherri Smith, Debra Muntz and Jan dellRandolphheldFremont without a point the last four minutes to pull away from a 41-41 deadlock.Joyce Grim, who scored 26 points, and Cheryl Grim, who had 20, each had three field goals in the decisive final quarter, Joyce Grim, who made 24 of 25 free throws against Fremont earlier, hit eight of nine. Cheryl Martin had six points for Fox Valley.Elaine Lee scored 20 points, Donna Fisher 14 and Debbie Paxton 7 for Fremont. Pam Hols paced the Fremont defense with a dozen rebounds.“We just weren’t able to get to the basket when we needed“They could have knuckled down and went under. Fremont is tough. We did miss some easy shots but then they were generous too and missed some. I thought our guards did a real good job, especially at the end.”Fox Valley’s ‘best’Fox Valley’s boys opened a 14-4 first quarter lead and had a 36-14 bulge by the half in what coach Swede Larson called “by far the best game” played by his Trotters in a 7-4 season.
