ISchayes Sinks Fouls to Win Overtime GameWeird Calls, Dispute on Score Mar Contest.Special to The Post-StaniarJ ■HERSHEY, Pa., Jan. 19.— The Syracuse Nationals moved into the Eastern Division leadership of the National Basketball Association, by a half game over Boston here tonight by defeating the Philadelphia Warriors when Dolph Schayes dropped in a pair of free throws after he had been fouled as an overtime period ran out.The night of weird officiating came to a ridiculous climax when the final score was officially announced as 98 to 97, the scorer evidently not noting that Schayes made the second conversion which actually made it 99 to 97. A crowd of fans and his teammates had crowded around him for the final tally.With Boston losing to Fort Wayne at Amherst, Mass., the Nats now will go into their game in Syracuse Thursday night with the divisional lead.The Nats apaprently won the game in regulation time when Big John Kerr dumped in a rebound but an inexperienced 24- ( second timekeeper caused the goal j to be disallowed.With the score 88-all, the Nats got possession of the ball with 30 seconds to go. Dick Farley made j a scoring attempt that bounded back into the onrushing Kerr’s hands and he rammed it .home with the game clock reading six ( seconds.OFFICIAL PROTESTThe Nats were amazed to hear that the 24-second timekeeper lot the buzzer go off after the ball \ left Farley’s hands, contrary to , the workings of the new regulation.Coach A1 Cervi argued in vain that the timer should have . started the clock over again on ! Farley's shot but Officials Joe . Serafin and Bill Smith refused to . allow the score. Cervi then lodged t an official .protest.Kerr started the overtime scor- ; ing with another rebound basket and Schayes' free throw gave the _ Nats a 91 to 88 lead. Neil Johnston tallied from outside and-Jack George tied it with a free throw,After Kerr hit again from underneath, George came back with the equalizer. A pair • of free throws by Schayes were matched . by Johnston and Paul Arizin hit a fielder that put the Warriors ahead.With 45 seconds left Paul Seymour scored on a jump shot for the final deadlock, 97-all, Schayes , then settling the hectic affair with this free throws, which should have given him a total of 23 points -but the score went to NBA head' quarters with a point shy.CLOSE BATTLEIt was a nip and tuck battle all the Way with the Nats leading 21 to 20 at the end of the first j period, trailing by 45 to 41 at the half and leading again by 87 to 65 at the three-quarter mark.The Nats went out ahead by 85 to 80 but then got in trouble when Red Rocha, who had Paul Arizin pretty well bottled up previously, fouled out.Arizin led a flurry that tied the score.. Schayes got the lead back at 87 to 85 but the Nats missed , scoring; chances on a number of / errors and a free throw and i fielder by George Dempsey » knotted it up at 88-all with 30 seconds to go, setting the stage for the timer’s incorrect handling of the 24-second clock.In scoring their fourth victory in seven games over Philadelphia, 1 the Nats got a tremendous per-formance by George King, who ' tallied 21 points behind Schayes’ 22. Dolph led the Nats in their control of the boards with 19 rebounds.Kerr and Paul Seymour finished with 12 points apiece and Rocha, 10. Johnston tallied 22 for the Warriors with Jack George netting 18 and George Dempsey, 11.TUCKER SOUGHTNats’ President Dan Biasone met with Jim Tucker, former Du-quesne University ace in an attempt to get him to' join the club. They will meet again in Syracuse Thursday. Tucker’s decision hinging on whether he can enter summer school at Syracuse U. rather than finish the second semester at Duquesne.
