Men’s Open—* *• . • • ’ * .Town of Pulaski Recreation■ aDepartment Men’s Open Basketball League play began last week with the defending champions picking up where they left off from last season.Last year’s regular season and tournament titles were split between perennial league power Clark’s Crew and the No Names, respectively.Clark’s which won 14 straight last year before falling to the NoNames in the tournament final, open this campaign with two wins, the first an 85-53 decision over the Fairfax Gang.Last year’s league MVP Jerome Brown scored 20 and newcomer Mark Ward added 24 to power Clark’s inside attackGuards Bobby Hunter and Sammy Poindexter split 28 points.Mike Austin led The Gang with 15, while Doug Franklin had 12 and Jay Warren 11.Fairfax lost the second half by only one, 41-40, but trailed 44-13 at intermission.Clark’s stopped Coca Cola/ 94-59 as four players scored double digits led by Brown with 27, Chris Johnson followed closely with 24, .Bobby Hunter had 15 and Gary Alexander 13.•Coke also got four in double numbers led by Paul Mezza with 15, Doug Quesenberry 14, Brad Golden 13 and Steve Duncan 10.The No Names (13-2 last season) edged surprising Fairfax Gang, 66-65 as Patrick Lawson was fouled at the buzzer and hit the second foul shot for th€ game winner.Mike Austin and Jay Warren both scored 10 second half points to rally The Gang from an eight point halftime deficit;Larry Fox led the No Names with 18 points, while Lawsonand Glenn Pratt both added 14.Austin led The Gang with 16. John Franklin, Warren and Jame.8 Duncan all -added 10.The No Names were more impressive in an 82-66 win over Stevens Funeral Home (formerly LongAirdox).• Pennis Shrewsberry starred in a losing effort for Stevens with 36 points, and early in the second half moved into first place on the league’s all time scoring list,surpassing Randy Olverson.Shrewsberry has 3,870 points, and Olverson 2,851.The No Names got a balanced effort as former Bluefield State player Lee Walker and Fox scored 19 each/Arnold scored 18 and Lawson 17, with four treys,Gene Dillion had 12 first half points for Stevens. \.!Electroplate Rite opened with a 75-35 victory over ^Woody’s as Leo Akers scored 16, Tom Mattox 15, Terry Smith 12, and Danny Conner 11.Charlie Crowder led Woody’s w$i 10 points, eight coming inthe first three minutes.■. * *EPR won the second half 43-12; .■ • f .■, i ,EPR jumped out to an early 20-point lead then held on in the jcond half for a 77-73 win overPepsiCola.• * • 1 • ' • -Conner poured in 30 points with five treys. Anthony Barnes nailed 18, Shannon Doss 17 and Tony Pickett 12 for Auto Sales which rallied from a seven point half-time deficit, despite making only 5-of-19 second half free throws.
