Speeds Of lop § TC 250 Qualifiers Over 70 mphThe TC 250 track record of i 74.14 m.p.h. set by Tom Marks of Traverse City last Friday during time trials withstood •challengers Monday during the final day of. qualification' runs for the TC 250 snowmobile race..As the fastest qualifier, Marks j will receive $500 and will be! on the pole position, for the start of the TC 250 snowmobile classic at 10 a.m. Saturday. •Behind Marks will be 16 Ski-Doos, 11 Polarises, 8 Arctic Cats, 6 Yamahas, 3 Chaparrals,-3 Rupps and 2 Sno-Jets.• Speeds in general were faster during Monday’s runs; resulting in several changes in the list of the top 10 times. Among the top eight qualifiers, speeds were in excess of 70 m.p.h.- Speeds all during time trials ran well ahead of last year. To be among the top 50 machines •in this year’s race a driver had.' to have a recorded, time of at least 65.39 m.p.h. Last year the final machine of the top 50 recorded a speed of 61.52 m.p.h. 1 ■ Defending champion Tom f Welch of Brethren, who return-! ed Monday on a Polaris to make i I a second attempt at qualifying, l ran the % —mile track at 69.87 I m.p.h., putting Mm in twelfth i; ■position on race day. During the r .first day of time trials, Wednesday, Welch recorded a speed 11 of 62,36 m.p.h., which would s not have put him among the p top 50. h; ■ Roger Griner of Interloehen, IV last year’s time trial' record' o: setter, also returned to the track Monday for a second at- ctempt. Griner was clocked at 73.234 m.p.h., putting him in third position.Among the 50 machines to qualify were four Traverse City drivers: Marks, in first position, Don Steinbaeh in 13th position, A1 Penney in 22nd position, and Everett Peck in 35th position.-Gene Denman, Jr., of Acme will enter the race in 33rd position.In spite of a predicted warming spell at.mid-week, race officials expect ■ the track to be in top shape Saturday and a cooling spell expected on the weekend should provide ideal conditions.With contingency money, over $20,000 will be divided among the 'top finishers in this'year’s race..'The folowing list shows the top 12 qualifiers.
