To Gearhart, a reserve navy pilot, if it doesn’tmove fast, it isn’t interesting.Consequently he has his eyes on the NASCA Grand National stock car race upcoming in February at Daytona Beach in which veteran driver Jack Smith has tooled to a number of records in stock Pontiacs.Smith, who holds the two-lap qualifying record for the unlimited speed two and a half mile t r i o v a 1 Daytona International Speedway with an average speed of 152.129 miles per hour which was established last July in a 1960 Pontiac, has two 1961 Pontiacs ■ ready for action this season, but • is dinging to his record pacing 1960 Pontiac as an alternate.Smith also holds the 100-mile i record for the Daytona track with i an average speed of 146.892 miles lt;per hour and this mark will be at stake in the two 100-mile Grand i National races sited for Friday, February 24. Smith also set a new ■ 250-mile mark in the “Daytona Firecracker 250“ race last- July 4 with an average speed of 146.842 miles per hour.
