Sunday, January 1?. 1965 Centralia (Til.) Sentinel 5Niep sm4 ••v1NotesBy Bill NiepoctterThe Centralia High students had no tickets to the game Friday at Ml. Vernon because of the small seating capacity in the Rams’ gym.Unfortunately, there was room for a man from Elkhart. Ind., and Mt. Vernon and Centralia adults. The gym was packed with adults who “just had to see” the game while students, lor whom the game is being played, were excluded.Iiiis is one of the unfortunate things which has occurred in prep athletics. Everyone realizes without the adults fare the athletic program would have a tough time existing. But to omit the students seems to be tiie lowest the program can get.I’ll not preach on this as the great time in these students’ lives because that is melodramatic and will not alter the fact several hundred CTIIS students were left home because the gym was filled. I’ll not even mention the adults packed in the gym certainly prevented a lot of students from “seeing their team” play.1iThe game is over and the way it turned out it probably will be lost in the shuffle that the kids did not have seats. But it doesn’t alter the fact that it “ ‘taint” right. And the ResultsThe Mt. Vernon Rams did not look like the club which Centralia handled by 30 points a few weeks ago. The Rams came toFriday’s Baseball SigningsBy The Associated TressNational LeaguePhiladelphia — Utility player Cookie Rojas and relief pitcher Ed Roebuck.Pittsburgh — Rookie pitchers Phil Cunningham and James L. Walker.Milwaukee — Pitcher Gene Garnell, and shortstop Santos Alomar.Chicago — Outfielder Doug Clemens, catcher Vic Roznov-sky, and infielders Joe Amalfi-tano and Mack Kuykendall.American LeagueLos Angeles—Outfielder Willie Smith, infielder Vic Power and pitchers George Brunet and Aubrey Gatewood.Iplay, outhustled. outrebounded and outshot the Orphans Friday.Centraiia’s offense mired down with only Mel Stalls and Dick Garrett showing any signs of | consistency. Karl Martin w-as stopped by a strong Mt. Vernon deiense while Curt Bryant and Charics Starr seldom got theball.it is a common fact that three men cannot beat five and with Bryant and Starr just giving the ball back to their mates, it was | obvious Centralia needs more scoring punch. The Rams were definitely stronger with Danny Hester in | the starting lineup and LannyShaw in the bleachers. That’s a ; twist one never thinks of at the j start 01 the season.; And Now There Is Onel ive players fell off the dou-I ble iigure mark in prep basketball in the last two weeks leaving j omy one who has hit 10 or more I points in every game.1 ne last one is Rod Wrone of Carlyle.Failing from the elite group were Aviston’s Bill Hermann, Breese’s Mike Hostmeyer and Cisne’s Gary Sloan. Friday Centraiia’s Karl Martin and Kin-mundy - Alma's Bob Winks supped from the list.lo show how tough it is to go through a season without ever falling below 10 points in a game, last year Cliff Berger’s low was 7. Tom Jackson of Mulberry Grove, Tom Cox of Patoka, Chuck Mellein of Okawvilie and Herb Dingwerth of Okawvilie all turned the trick, however. In 1963, Joe Stark of Breese and Wes Killion of Carlyle were the lone players to attain that goal. Stark’s low for the seasons was 19.In 1962, Stark with a low of 17 headed a three-man crew which included Killion and Bill Ruppelof Sandoval.Stark could well hold the record around here with 66 consecutive games over 10 points, with his low 13. His low was against Ashley, 8, in the 14th game of the 1962 season which snapped | his string.Wrone currently has the longest streak with i6.ConsolationBaden Meettry into a 19-point bulge starting the final eight minutes of play.i1eMike Tomaszewski pumped in 19 points for the losers and Rick Organ added 16. Paul Smolley gave the Wolves a third man in double figures with 10.1In the third place game Mas-coutah had no trouble with the Breese Cardinals. 80-32. Mascou-sjtah raced to a 25-4 first period i lead as the Cards were as cold as the weather. At halftime Mascoutah ownedIn the FutureComing up soon will be Mike Tomaszewski’s eclipsing of the Ashley High scoring record. The mark is currently 1,004. Friday Tomaszewski tallied 19 to reach the 998 total for the season. The single season mark is 549, both held by Denny Newcomb.Larry Thompson will clear the 1.000 mark before the season ends since he needed 466 at the start of the year. He is nearing the 300 mark for the season.Sandoval’s Ken Gregory could attain the mark if his team plays enough games. The junior had 502 entering the season.Charles Fuller of Woodlawn also could atain that magic number since he needed 447 at the start of the campaign.T O 01
