Myers, Grandview Driver in International Snowmobile RaceA field of 350 Snowmooiles will roar out of a field near WinnipegTuesday, January 21 to kick off the10th anniversary of the St. Paul Winter Carnival International 500 Snowmobile race. Three days later, Jan. 23. the first driver passing by the checkered flag on Lake Phalen will mark the official countdown of the 1975 Winter Carnival.The following information will introduce you to the 1975 Saint Paul Winter Carnival International 5008iws*»n*©bile Race, featuring RonMyers among the nearly 350 entrants:Six Canadian provinces and 20 states will be represented by drivers ranging in age #W*n 16 to 63 years. They will be competing for a purse in excess of $35,000 with $10,000 for the first place winner, second place, $4,000, 3rd - $2,000, 4th, $1,500, 5th, $1,000 6th, $900, 7th, $800, 8th, $700, 9th, $600, 10th, $500 and all finishers sharing in $8,500 to divide equally among qualified finishers, i For the racer who has experienced more difficulty than most, there is the prospect of winning the $1,000 “True Grit Award” sponsor ed by the Hamms’ Breweries, j Principal changes in the race include a reversal of the route which ran to Winnipeg last year to help the city kick off its centennial celebration. This year the race will start in Winnipeg, again through the cooperation of the Tourist and Convention Association of Manitoba It will end in St. Paul with overnight stops in East Grand Forks and Alexandria.The allowable engine size hasbeen increased from 300 cc’s to 340 cc’s to coincide with manufacturer’s stock production for 1975 models. With favorable snow and weather conditions the record time of 11 hours, five minutes and 4 seconds set in 1971 by LeRoy Lind-blad could fall. Last year, Marvin Ode, Thief River Falls, registered the fastest time of the 276 entrants with his Arctic Cat: 11 hours, 50 minutes and 24 seconds.Ttoe premiere of snowmobile ev* ents, the “500” is rich in history. The route dates back to the 1917 Winter Carnival, when ten sled dog teams raced from Winnipeg to St. Paul along the 510-mile route of the Great Northern Railroad's Pembina mail line in the Red River-St. Paul Derby.
