By BILL HART. . . CLARENCE GAPEN-WHO WITH HIS brother, Lonnie, pioneered the all-weather winter tire (sawdust) phones:‘Sofar as most of us old timers know the coldest weather recorded in Monongalia County was at Maidsville on Feb. 10, 1899 and the temperature was 45 degrees below zero . . . father woke us boys and said: “it seems real cold this morning; we better go look about the stock” ... we did and found our dairy herd almost frozen in the barn . . . mother made hot meal mash and we fed that to the cows after we put blankets on them .. . they shivered like anybody would thawing out. I am sure our cows would have frozen to death if we had waited until 7 a.m. to go to the barn as we often did . . . father got us up at 5 that morning ... it was really cold . . . father wrote the event down in our Bible . . . that is why I know it is true. ... in the “auld days” anything written in the Bible washinHino hprancp QQ 44/lftO nf thp nponlp WPrP. . .
