UTEP students do well in city baseball leagueJuan Arturo MuroCorrespondentReuben Williams and Brett Haggerty are two senior UTEP engineering students who took their love of baseball and formed a team that competes in the city's largest adult baseball league, the El Paso Winter Summer Baseball League. The stocky, athletic Williams is the player-manager of die team, and the 6-foot-1, broad-shouldered, clean-cut Haggerty is his assistant. The Cardinals-so named in honor of the major league team that resides in St. Louis, Missouri- are mostlyUTEP students that were disgruntled at the fact that the university does not harbor a baseball program. It’s too bad that there isn't any [baseball program], otherwise, I’m sure many of us would have at least tried out, Wiliams said. -Blending the responsibilities of attending classes, doing homework, keeping jobs and attending the league’s contests each Sunday, the Cardinals are happy to have an athletic outlet for their competitive spirit and love for baseball, although it has not been easy. When we first got all our guys and joined the league, weonly won two or three games out of 17. By the second season, we reached the playoffs, Wiliams said.Indeed, the ball club is now one of the more respected outfits in the league that boasts of teams made up of hardcore, semi-professional athletes who compete in other amateur and semi-pro leagues in El Paso and Juarez.Wiliams and Haggerty can be found during the weekday at the engineering building and anyone interested in competing inthe league as a team or as an individual should call 545-2377 or 630-2757._Juan Arturo Muro may be reached at prospector@utep.edu
