***The coming heavy-weight fight between Jeffries and Ruhlin at Cincinnati on February 15 brings up the question again of the championship belt. Although Jim Jeffries bus won the championship three times he has never become the possessor of the belt formerly held by John L. Sullivan and James J. Corbett.Behind the failure of Jeffries to gain the trophy to which he is so justly entitled. there is an interesting story. Th? belt is hung up by a New York sport -ing paper and up until the time it won by Jeffries there never has been any hesitancy displayed by the donors in turning the emblem of victory over to the champion. When Jeffries was to fight the Sailor Tom Sharkey for the chainpionshiD of the world a writer on the aforesaid sporting sheet was named by Sharkey as referee. Jeffries for some reason found objections to the sporting scribe, however, and refused to let him officiate. This caused a bitter feeling to spring up between the two men and in turn the owners of the sporting publication declared that Jeffries should never wear the belt. For that reason Jeffries, the greatest of all heavyweight champions, has never had the pleasure of owning the belt, which is valued at about $5000.According to the Cincinnati Enquirer Jeffries will make another claim for the belt within a few days through his manager William A. Brady, and if the latter is successful in securing it the man who wins the big battle in Cincinnati will get the belt. The matter of who will referee th? fight at Cincinnati has been decided and George Siler will act in that eapi-citv. Siler is the best known official in the world today and has always given satisfaction to all parties concerned.
