Wednesday • January 13,1999 • The Hays Daily News • B1Great Bend satisfies hunger against HHSBy STEVE BELLHaw Daily NewsGREAT BEND — The Great Bend boys' basketball team had the hungry look of a Panther Tuesday night.When the unbeaten Panthers left their gym after a 65-47 victory over Hays High School, their appetite was satisfied.Great Bend used superior quickness in winning the Western Athletic Conference game at the GBHS gym.Hays High’s 6-foot-ll junior center Sean Finn dominated early, but Great Bend used what Panther coach Jeff Langrehr termed “a great defensive performance” in shutting down the HHS inside attack in the second half.Finn used a huge size advantage,scoring 10 points in the first half and tallying six of the Indians’ first nine points. Hays High led 94) early, but Great Bend rallied with a half-court trapping defense to score the final 12 points of the first quarter.The Indians (2-6 overall, 0-2 WAC) kept the game close for three quarters, but Great Bend blew Hays High out in the fourth period, 28-17,The Panthers (8-0,2-0) did nothing to diminish their No. 8 ranking in Class 5A in the latest coaches poll.It was Hays High’s sixth straight loss.Finn connected on 5-of-7 shots in the first half, but managed only l-of-5 down the stretch.He led HHS with 12 points, six rebounds and five blocked shots. Seniors Mitch McGuire and Todd Linenberger scored 10 points each.It’s been a frustrating beginning to the second semester for HHS, who lost to No. 7-ranked Liberal 53-49 at home on Friday.“We’ve been showing signs of coming out of it,” HHS coach Rick Keltner said. But right now, we’re frustrated. We need to keep working hard and improve.“But, at. the same time, give Great Bend some credit.”The Panthers rallied from a cold-shooting start in which they missed their first seven from the field. Sophomore Phil Simoneau’s 3-pointer made it 18-16, HHS, but Snyder’s last-second, off-balance shot from the lane put Great Bend up 23-21 at halftime.McGuire's trey to start the third quarter gave the Indians their last lead at 24-23. Great Bend used HHS turnovers against the full-court press to build a 32-24 lead with a 9-0 run.The end of the third quarter and the opening minutes of the fourth proved frustrating for HHS. Great Bend went on a 14-2 run to build a 49-32 lead. But it might not have gotten off to such a quick start if the Indians had not been caught unaware as the fourth quarter began.Hays High was just coming out of its huddle when the game officials dropped the ball after the second buzzer. The Panthers took advantage as Snyder scored an uncontested layup.Keltner was later hit with a technical foul in the middle of Great Bend’s scoring outburst.“I remember hack in 1990, when we started 4-6 and won 11 of our last 13 or something like that,” Keltner said. “It’s a matter of clicking in on some things we’re not doing now.Hays High will attempt to snap its losing streak next Thursday in the opener of the Colby Orange and Black Classic: The Indians will play McCook, Neb.
