Hays High plays host to Larned, a Class 4A team which was ranked in the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association’s poll until this wedk;'1 b'ri1 Tiiesday. Nd.‘4:.rahlsed 1 (coaches poll) Great Bend has already beaten Larned by 20 points this season.“They easily beat Lamed earlier, but we thought we could hang with them (Panthers),” Hays High coach Randy Goodale said. “But we’re not playing like we need to play.”Goodale said Great Bend's ability to nm the floor and force turnovers with its defense hurt the Indians.“They ran the ball well and got some easy layups,” he said. “Their full-court pressure hurt also. Those are things we worked on.“We're not executing. But, we can play better basketball. To their credit, our girls did not quit. They are still playing hard. We’re not playing fundamentally sound basketball yet.”Sophomore Melissa Beyer sank 9-of-12 from the line and led Hays High with 13 points. Senior Heather Robinson scored seven.Senior Ashley Olivier added 15 points and six rebounds for Great Bend and junior reserve guard Julie Heidrick and senior forward Kaci Atkinson chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.Hays High’s schedule gets even tougher with the game against Larned.“We played Liberal last week, then had Great Bend, and now Larned,” Goodale said. “We’ll try to keep our girls’ attitude up and working hard. In some ways, it (the tough schedule) can make you stronger.”
