Against New CaneyBY MIKE BRUTON Eagle Sports WriterC0IJJ5GE STATION — When you get a cat cornered against a wall, it’ll come out fighting. And since Tigers are of the feline genus, look for AM Consolidated to come out with claws drawn tonight when it hosts a brawny New Caney team with the varsity tipoff coming at 7:30 in Tiger gym.The Tigers are in a corner with three straight losses leading them into the New Caney contest, and they realize that it’s time to start fighting. And this being Consol’s first home district game the incentive is there for a Tiger win.CONSOL WILL need a super effort to compete with the bigger, more physical Eagles, and this game takes the shape of a must game for the Tigers, since they are 0-1 in district play after falling to flawless Tomball last Friday night.“I’m optimistic about us beating New Caney,” Consolidated coach Jim Foreman commented. “I really think our kids will come back strong. They know we’ve got to start winning, because we can’t lose two or three right here, or we’ll be out of it to begin with. The Eagles are muscular inside, and the Tigers’ problem will be to control the boards, and prevent New Caney from stepping in with the easy bucket on the offensive rebounds. Foreman said he would use the press to try and neutralize the physical advantage enjoyed by the Eagles. He also said the Tigers would be blocking out under the basket, and trying to protect the backside.Consol will be tested once again, as the New Caney team is also has experience with three starters returning for another 11-AAA campaign. “They have a lot of experience, they’ve played together,” Foreman said. “On a given night they can give anybody trouble.”ANOTHER MATTER of paramount concern to the Tigers would have to be the lack of scoring punch, a problem that has plagued them throughout the season. They aren’t taking bad shots, as Foreman has the Tiger team well drilled on executing and working for the good percentage shot. But at intervals in almost every game this season, Consol's shots just won’t fall in.Philip Steen, who leads Tiger scorers with an 11.3 average, was denied a field goal, against Tomball, and his only two free throws in the district opener. The 6-1 senior will be trying to regain his offensive form against the Eagles tonight.terry Williams is the only other Tiger with an average in the double figures, as he is producing a fraction more than 10 points a game. Scott Shafer, Ronnie Morgan and Pat Cartwright will join Williams and Steen as starters in tonight’s game.THE CONSOLIDATED student body is sponsoring another special night, this time, recognizing the parents of male and female basketball players in grades 0-12 of Consolidated school district. The “Parents Night” is the second special event of many that will accompany Consol home games this season. All the parents of the Tiger cagers will be admitted free. The junior varsity game will precede the varsity action at 6p.m.
